This class will introduce students to sculptingthe human figure. Through workshops using figure models and photographic references, students will learn how torenderanatomyof the figure focusing on proportion and “creating what you see”.While realistic representation will be the foundation of our sculpting techniques, conceptual elements willbe integrated into the course projectsas students delve into portraying emotion and narrative. The course will combine 2D sketching exercises with 3D maquette making to informand explore the scope of eachproject. Weekly assignments will includecompleting journal entries, sketching exercises, and independently working on ceramic projects.This course will cover surfacing techniques including terrasigilatta, slips, stains,glazes,and mix media finishes.

Though this course is open to all levels, it is recommended that students havepreviousexperience working in the Evergreen ceramic studio.

This course is planned as meeting in-person and on campus. Changes to the curriculum may occur if there are concerns with COVID transmission or if campus policy shifts to ensure student safety.

Students will be charged a $50 Arts Lab fee for this course. This covers full access to the staffed ceramic studio during open hours, use of glazing materials, and kiln firings for the quarter.
