Book Arts: Letterpress and Hand-Bookbinding
This introduction to Books Arts emphasizes letterpress printing, hand-bookbinding, and experimental artist's books. Learn to hand-set and print metal type using the college's type collection and Vandercook and Chandler & Price presses. Learn hand bookbinding, including ancient and modern practices and opportunities to work toward fine binding methods. Explore experimental artist's books, a practice of engaging with books as an expressive form—latent with culture values and formal intricacies. First session will be loaded with demonstrations and small projects to allow students to develop comfort with tools and equipment and proficiency with basic practices. In second session, class time will be used for more open studio time and one-to-one instruction as each student develops personal projects and areas of focus.
