I grew up in Tacoma, Washington and graduated from Henry Foss High School in 2003. After high school I attended Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington on the Act Six Scholarship and Leadership Initiative; earning my bachelor's degree in Political Science in 2007. During my undergraduate studies I worked for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D - WA), and Washington State Senator Pat Thibaudeau. I have also worked with a non-profit organization dedicated to community development work in Tacoma.
After my undergraduate work I joined Teach For America, a national movement dedicated to providing all children with a quality education. As a 2007 corps member I taught secondary school students in Atlanta, Georgia and Avondale, Arizona. While teaching I earned my master’s in secondary education from Arizona State University’s College of Teacher Education and Leadership (CTEL) program.
Currently, I am one of the Educational Specialist for the Upward Bound program. My primary responsibility is to manage the academic components of the program to ensure students are prepared and equipped with the skills and knowledge to be successful through high school and into college. I work to develop curriculum, mentor and manage UB instructors, develop workshops, teach classes, and support the overall organization of the program. However, my favorite part of my position is working with the UB students. They continue to challenge and motivate me to contribute to the program effectively and innovatively, so they will have an experience to look back on and remember for the rest of their lives. The UB students are truly a treasure in my life, and I am honored to have the privilege to serve and help them achieve their goals of attaining a post-secondary education.
