Apply to Join TRiO Student Success
TRiO Accepting Applications!
TRiO Student Success is funded by the U.S. Department of Education to provide academic support and advising to 180 Evergreen State College students. We serve students who are low-income, first generation, and students with disabilities.
Because much of the Evergreen student population is eligible for TRiO and we are only able to serve 180, we “close” admission to the program once we have enrolled that number. Most of our students stay with us throughout their entire time at Evergreen.
That said, many of our students also graduate each year! When students graduate, or when students leave for other reasons, some space in our 180-person caseload opens up.
When space in our TRiO Program opens up, we open an “application window”— a time when people are able to submit an application to be processed. Once we receive those applications, we take as many as we are able to fill the program. Once we reach capacity, we close the application process again.
Who Does TRiO Student Success Serve?
First Generation Students
Are you in first generation in your family to attain a bachelor's degree? If neither of your custodial parents or legal guardians have a bachelor's degree or higher then you qualify as a first generation student.
Low Income Students
Do you qualify as a low-come student according to federal guidelines? Do you qualify for a pell grant? Do you or your custodial parents/legal guardians not need to file taxes because your income is too low? If so, you may qualify as a low income student.
Students with a Disability
Do you have a documented physical or learning disability? Is this documentation on file with Access Services for Students with Disabilities? If so, you qualify for our services as a student with a disability.
What if I do not attend the Olympia campus?
Although TRiO Student Success mainly serves qualifying students who attend classes on the Olympia campus, we may be able to assist students from other Evergreen campuses on a case-by-case basis. If you attend courses on another Evergreen campus (Tribal: Native Pathways, Tacoma, or Grays Harbor) and would like to inquire about our services, please contact us by email email@example.com or by phone (360) 867-5927.
When is the due date?
Our application window begins September 18, 2017 and is open until October 13, 2017 or until full.
What if I only meet one of the eligibility requirements?
You qualify for TRiO Student Success if you meet one or more of the eligibility requirements. Even if you are still unsure, apply! Each application goes through a review process to determine eligibility and need.
Do I have to be admitted to Evergreen before I apply for TRiO?
Yes, you have to be at least a half-time admitted student.
What if I applied last year?
If you applied during the Spring or Summer of 2017, you do *not* need to apply this year. If you’re already in TRiO with an Advisor you’re good for your whole time here at Evergreen.
What if I apply during the application window and don’t get in?
There will always be more applications than spaces for our program. You may submit an application during our open application windows and still not receive a space in the program. However, if spaces open up during the year, we will return to the already submitted applications. So—if our application window opens again *within the same school year*, you do not need to re-apply.
What should I do if I qualify for TRiO but there’s no space for me?
First of all, we wish we could take everyone! We recommend making a connection with an Academic Advisor in our Academic and Career Advising department. We also recommend checking out the resources at First People’s Multicultural Center, Student Activities & Access Services. You’re also always welcome to come check in with us and say hello.
Should I re-apply next year?
Yes. We will re-start the application process each school year. Keep your eyes open for open application windows and check in with us often if you’re a returning student interested in getting into TRiO.
How do I know if I’m eligible?
Good question. If you think you may be (first-generation, low-income, or have a documented disability), come chat with us and we can confirm with you.
I'm a transfer student; Can I apply?
How long does it take to get a decision about my acceptance?
I'm accepted! What do I have to do?
Contact us by email: firstname.lastname@example.org or phone: (360) 867-5927 and set up an appointment with an Academic Specialist. Once you have been accepted to TRiO Student Success you are required to attend an intake meeting which can take up to 1 hour. Contact us to schedule an intake meeting during open hours which are Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
