Updated 20 May 2003

Rebuilding Your Desktop

Rebuilding your desktop is simple procedure that can help in the performance of your machine. This should be done at least once a week. If you regularly rebuild your desktop you probably won't notice a difference in performance after each rebuild, but you will avoid having more serious problems in the future.

How to rebuild your desktop:

1. Shutdown or Restart your computer
2. Once you hear the "Bong" at startup, hold down the Apple (cmd) and Option keys
3. Continue pressing both the Apple (cmd) and Option keys as the computer boots
4. Once your computer asks you if you're sure you want to rebuild your desktop you can release the Apple and Option keys.
5. Click on Yes to rebuild your desktop

This process my take awhile depending on the size and content of your hard drive, and will help maintain the health of your computer.
