In these times of depleting oil, exploding global economies, and our voracious appetite for energy, we will explore the viability of current and alternative energy options and the physics behind them, to see where our energy future may lie. We will examine our own carbon and energy footprint, and the implications of reducing them. Topics will include fuel cells, solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, fossil fuels, nuclear fission, fusion, tidal, and biofuels.

This course meets pre-requisites for upper-level, pre-med, and graduate Physics.

Credits awarded: 8 credits (lower division) in physics of energy

Join us in exploring Russian folktales, epic songs, myth and magic practiced through the centuries. From our Russian folklore base, we examine psychological approaches to folktale interpretation, gender issues in the folklore and the society which nurtured it, food in Russian folklore, adult humor in the folktales and the larger world of deep myth as discussed by Joseph Campbell and others. Students will read extensively, engage in research projects and cook a traditional Russian dinner.

Credits awarded: 2 credits each in Russian folklore and expository writing
