Undergraduate Study Abroad Scholarship Information

General and Regional Scholarships

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship

Award of up to $5000 for studying abroad for 4 weeks up to one academic year (excluding summer study). Must demonstrate financial need and be a Pell Grant recipient. Application deadline: April for fall study and September for spring study. See web sight for more details. Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. 25 Critical Need Language Supplements will be offered to Gilman Scholarship recipients during the academic year. Critical Need Languages include: Arabic, Chinese, Turkic, Persian, Indic, Korean, and Russian. www.iie.org/gilman

Freeman-Asia

Award of up to $3,000 for summer (min 8 weeks), $5,000 for semester (min. 12 weeks) /quarter (min. 10 weeks), and $7,000 for the academic year. Must demonstrate financial need by receiving need-based aid through the FAFSA. Eligible countries are: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Application deadline: April for fall, March for summer, and October for spring/winter. www.iie.org/freeman-asia

David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship

A merit-based award of up to $8,000 for summer, $10,000 for semester, and $20,000 for academic year. Be aware that there is a post-study National Security Service requirement for this scholarship. More information can be obtained on the website. Application deadline: February. www.iie.org/nsep

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships

There are 3 types of scholarships including a single ($23,000) and multi-year scholarship ($11, 500 each year for 2 years) and a cultural scholarship for intensive language study and cultural immersion for 3 months ($10,000) or 6 months ($15,000). Scholarships for Study in Italy

National Italian American foundation

Scholarships for Study in Japan

The US-Japan Bridging Foundation awards scholarships

For study for one semester or academic year in Japan. Students must be accepted in a program in Japan, and provide the tuition. The scholarship recipients, chosen by a volunteer committee, are usually between $2,500-$4,000 and are meant to provide for travel and daily cost-of-living expenses. http://www.bridgingfoundation.org/

The Reitaku Foundation of America

Scholarship for studying at Reitaku University in Japan. There are two full-year undergraduate scholarships each year. The scholarship will cover round-trip economy class airfare to Tokyo, Reitaku University tuition, and student dormitory fees. A modest monthly stipend is provided for dining expenses.

An award in the amount of $750 for students studying abroad to lesser-developed areas of the world and who are committed to international understanding through appreciation of similarities and celebration of differences.

The Marshall Scholarship

This is a 2-year award for studying at any university in the UK. Rhodes Scholarship

Rhodes Scholars are elected for two years of study at the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year.
