  1. Always provide a complete orientation to the work place.
  2. Keep in mind that a student's priority is to get an education that will ultimately lead to a degree.
  3. Explain employer policies with the student. Be clear about what is expected of them at work.
  4. Encourage students to ask questions at work.
  5. Provide mentoring and coaching. This might be the first real work experience for many students.
  6. Give day to day performance feedback and recognition of employee effort and contribution.
  7. Document all incidents of poor performance.
  8. Have a clear termination policy and make sure students understand what it is.
  9. Periodically ask your student employees how they are doing or what could be improved.
  10. Don't allow troublemakers or substandard behavior to destroy morale.
  11. Avoid recognizing only results. Make sure employees get feedback for good performance daily.
  12. Keep students informed of all decisions, changes, updates, and upcoming events.
