About Faculty Foundation Grants
Faculty Foundation Grants, funded by The Evergreen State College Foundation, provide faculty with funding to cover the costs of conducting and sharing research or completing other scholarly and creative projects. Recipients will be selected by the Sponsored Research committee each fall during the competition for regular Sponsored Research awards. Academic Grants staff supports the committee and administers the competitions.
Continuing, term, library, administrative, and adjunct faculty who, at the time awards are offered, meet the conditions of article 15 of the current collective bargaining agreement will be eligible for funding. Funding is available during periods when faculty are on contract with the college for the current quarter or have a contract for the next quarter. Faculty who are eligible for both the traditional Sponsored Research award and this Foundation-funded award may apply for and, if selected, receive both. Eligible faculty may apply as teams for a single project.
Award Terms and Amounts
Awards are usually announced by the beginning of winter quarter and may be accessed for eligible expenses upon notification. Funds must be spent by the beginning of the following fall quarter. Awards are limited to one per academic year with an upper limit of $5,000 per faculty member--i.e., individual faculty applicants are limited to $5,000, a team of two faculty members to $10,000, and so on. Smaller requests are encouraged.
Travel not specifically funded by the regular travel budget. Faculty could apply for money to conduct research, collaborate with colleagues, etc.
Travel beyond the biennial limit for faculty. Faculty could apply for money to attend conferences, present research or fulfill professional duties at conferences, etc.
Publications and subscriptions for research needs - monographs, series, books, journals, online databases, etc. Publications and subscriptions will need to be purchased by the Library and will become part of the Library collections once the faculty member has completed the project.
Equipment and consumables required for completion of projects. Equipment will need to be purchased by the appropriate college purchasing agent (Lab Stores, Media Loan, Computing, etc.) and will become part of college inventory once the faculty member has completed the project.
Compensation for time worked at a base full-time rate of $200 per day for (comparable to entry-level faculty salaries) for work done when faculty are not on contract or paid leave, or are on contract less than full time.
Less-than-full-time faculty on contract will receive prorated daily compensation to bring them up to 1.0 FTE at the time of the project. (For example, a half-time faculty could get $100 per day while teaching; a three-quarter time faculty would be eligible for up to $50 per day; etc. Faculty teaching full time during the proposed project period would not be eligible for compensation.)
Compensation may be for a maximum of 20 days total at whatever rate the faculty is eligible to achieve 1.0 FTE. (For example, 20 days at $200 a day for regular faculty in non-contracted periods, or $4,000; or 20 days at $100 per day for Adjunct or Visiting faculty teaching half time, or $2,000; etc.)
Compensation will be allowable only for those days where a faculty is engaged in active research or meetings relevant to the project.
The Sponsored Research committee will assess each applications based on how well the proposal addresses the advertised criteria. Selection for this award will have no bearing on selection for any other awards for which an applicant may have applied unless the applicant has proposed the same activities in another grant proposal that has subsequently received funding. Committee members will compare Foundation Grant and regular Sponsored Research applications from the same applicant to ensure the same activities do not receive double funding.
An application consists of a cover sheet and a proposal and budget with narrative. Letters of recommendation are not required and will not be considered in the review of an application.
The cover sheet should include the project title and the applicant's name, e-mail address and campus telephone number.
In three pages or less (single spaced), the proposal and budget with narrative should address, and will be evaluated according to, the following criteria:
- Significance of the proposed project (25%). Why is this work important?
- Merit of proposed activities and timeline for completion (25%). How will these activities address your research questions or scholarly and professional goals? Is the timeline adequate?
- Extent to which these activities will advance the applicant's development as a scholar at Evergreen (25%). How will this project enhance what you know and are able to do?
- Extent to which additional funds are required to carry out this work (10%), i.e., adequate funding for this project is not available through regular college sources.
- The extent to which the budget is clearly delineated, adequate to meet project goals, with reasonable costs (15%). Is the budget adequate but economical? Have you proposed the right levels of expenditures on required goods and service? Is there evidence that cost estimates are reasonable?
Applications for Faculty Foundation Grants are due the second Friday of fall quarter at 5:00 pm and may be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org or in person at the Academic Grants Office, Library 2211. An electronic submission of a single PDF or Microsoft Word file is preferred.
