Deadline: February 1

The William Winden Achievement in the Arts Award was established in 2009 to honor and celebrate the life, art and, teaching of William (Bill) Winden, who joined the faculty of The Evergreen State College in 1972, and who was renowned as both a musician and a painter. After completing degrees in art and music at Stanford University, the University of Washington and the University of Illinois, he moved to Europe where he enjoyed a career as an opera singer in Germany and Switzerland, performing extensively with his wife, Joan, in Europe as well as America. Prior to coming to Evergreen, he taught music and opera at the University of Maryland.
He returned to painting shortly after joining the Evergreen faculty, and his watercolors have been exhibited
throughout the United States. At Evergreen, Bill taught courses across a broad spectrum of the Arts,
from opera performance to studio art.
His great love was teaching interdisciplinary programs which explored the relationships among the Arts and between the Arts and other subjects; such programs included “The Structure of Chaos: an Inquiry into Painting, Photography and the Science of Chaos”, “Form and Content”, and “The French Romantic Movement in Art, Music and Literature.” One way in which Bill brought his own interests in the visual and performing arts together was in the design of sets and costumes for operas he was directing.
This award seeks to honor a student who has successfully demonstrated significant achievement in the visual and/or performing arts. While applicants may submit work in either area, preference will be given to individuals who submit exemplary work in both fields or in projects exploring the connections between them.
