The Evergreen State College Swimming Program strives to offer a wide variety of instructional and recreation programming to the college and greater Olympia communities.

Classes are part of the SwimAmerica national based learn-to-swim program, developed by the American Swim Coaches Association.

The Program is designed to make the adjustment to the water easy and fun for all ages.

Lessons emphasize swimming skills, endurance, personal safety, and social skills while providing students with encouragement from SwimAmerica and Red Cross trained volunteers.

Information about adult learn to swim classes can be found in the Specialty Swimming Classes listings. Specialty Classes offer a variety of water safety, fitness and other water related classes. Examples of such classes include, Lifeguard training, Aqua Aerobics, CPR, and Yoga for swimmers. Many class in this area change form quarter to quarter.

Class Placement

Students should be enrolled in the lowest level in which they cannot complete all of the listed skills.
Registering at a higher level is a disservice to your child and will impair his/her learning rate. If your child has not been in lessons for an extended period of time, he/she may benefit from a review session, one level below the last level obtained.

Family Swim Lessons

Fee: $129

Wishing you had both more family time and desire to make sure your family is safer in, on, and around the water? Then this lesson format is just the thing for your family. All the family members will be taught in the same class with the same instructor. This means no more risk of having your children's lesson spread out over different time slots. You will hear and see what the instructor is teaching and be able to reinforce the skills away from the lessons. Not to mention that you can better your own swim skills at the same time and role model life long learning for your children. You can register up to five family members for the class for only $125. Note: If you are registering online you will only be able to list one family member at that time. The class space is then reserved for that person and their family. All family lessons are 30 minutes long. You must have one adult in the class for every family member under the age of 3 that participates. All participants must be at least 6 months of age.

Days Session 1 Session 2 Time
M/W 318 319 7:00 p.m.
Sat. 320 n/a  11:00 a.m.

Private and Semiprivate Lessons

Private lessons: $14 per class
Semiprivate lessons: $11 per class per person
Receive 30-minute private or 45-minute semiprivate swimming instruction for yourself or your children. Arrange lessons to fit your schedule. Semiprivate lessons are for two or more participants. Call 867-6536 for details.

By calling the above phone number and leaving your name, number and scheduling/instructor preferences, you will begin the process of finding an instructor. This information will be given to the instructors and if your needs match an instructor's availability, s/he will call you to establish a lesson schedule.

Prior to the first class, you will need to register and pay for your first month's lessons.

Pay the estimated amount for the upcoming month. Adjustments will be made as needed.

Please completely fill out a new registration form with each month's payment. Include the instructor's name on every registration form.

You will be charged for all missed lessons unless you notify the instructor or pool manager 24 business hours in advance of the scheduled lesson.

Note to parents and spectators:

We appreciate and encourage you supporting your swimmer through your presence at the pool deck during their lesson. Some of the following information can enhance this collaborative support for each swimmer.

  • Please encourage your swimmer to limit conversations with you to before and after class, except in urgent situations. Talking disrupts the flow of the class and your swimmer may miss important information from the instructor.

  • Please sit in the designated seating areas. This will help the lifeguards to see and respond to emergencies effectively.

  • If your child is of public school age please have them in gender appropriate dressing areas.

  • If you have any questions or concerns please talk to the head instructor on deck or call 867-6536
