The Outdoor Program
Intro to Backpacking Series
Join veteran outdoorsmen and TOP Staff Members Dave Robb and Josh Roth as they kick off the season with their Intro to Backpacking Series. This series, consisting of two classroom/campus days and a three day backpacking trip in the Buckhorn Wilderness is designed to introduce people completely new to the outdoors to how to enjoy multiple days camping outside comfortably and safely. They will cover a range of topics from how to pack, what to bring and how to get it on a budget, setting up camp, cooking, sleeping comfortably and much, much more.
The first classroom day will cover the basic theories and practices of effective backpacking. Staff will discuss equipment and how to prepare for trips in detail as well as field all of your questions.
In the second day on campus, students will learn the practical skills necessary for multi-day backpacking trips like using white gas camp stoves, setting up and tearing down camp, stringing bear bags and more. This will also be an opportunity to test out the fit of pack and learn to adjust the pack and its load to best suit your comfort and efficiency.
Finally, the classes lead into a culminating three day entry-level backpacking trip in the Olympic National Forest’s Buckhorn Wilderness. Students will have the opportunity to stay at two different camps and soak in the grandeur and rugged beauty of the mountains.
If you have ever wanted to get out for a hike or backpacking trip but didn’t know where to start, this series is for you. In a collaborative, supportive and positive learning environment, Staff will help you build a solid foundation of knowledge and experience that will allow you to branch out and begin truly taking advantage of the natural wonders that surround us.
