MARTIAL ARTS HISTORY

Sue Jennings began training in martial arts in 1984 by studying Taekwondo and earned her 1 st Degree Black Belt, from Grandmaster Young Hak Lee and then the World Taekwondo Federation in 1987. In 1989 she began studying Danzan Ryu Jujitsu from Prof. Ron Jennings and received her 1 st Degree Black Belt in 1995. She is currently ranked as a 4 th Degree Black Belt, which is considered a Senior Master. Sue has studied massage therapy from Prof. Sig Kufferath, Prof. Lamar Fisher and Leif Grunseth, an Olympic massage therapist. She was certified in Basic Back Massage and Long Life Restoration Massage by Jujitsu America in 2007. Along with the Danzan Ryu organizations that she is a life member, Sue is also a member of the Association of Women Martial Arts Instructors (AWMAI). She also received the Menkyo Kaiden title of Renshi after intensive training in 2003. She is one of only a dozen or so women to hold this title.

She has had ongoing classes teaching Danzan Ryu Jujitsu at the Evergreen State College in Olympia , Washington since 1998, and is lead instructor at KaishinKai Dojo near Centralia , Washington . She has taught numerous children's classes in Taekwondo and Jujitsu over the last 20 years, and now will be offering a Youth Jujitsu program at The Evergreen State College. Sue also teaches private lessons in jujitsu and women's self-defense classes. She has taught jujitsu at national conventions for Jujitsu America , Shoshin Ryu Yudanshakai, and taught at Ohana 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007. Ohana, meaning family, is a national event where all organizations that teach our style of jujitsu come together every 2 years for a convention. Sue has also taught at Camp Kokua for the American Jujitsu Institute, as well as at numerous Regional Martial Arts Seminars in Washington , and Oregon , and at the 2 nd Annual Rocky Mountain Regional Convention in American Fork, Utah for the American Judo and Jujitsu Federation. Sue is a certified national judge and has judged several national jujitsu competitions, most recently in Tucscon , Arizona . She is co-director of Kamp KaishinKai, an annual summer camp held in Washington State.

Sue has been recognized with the following awards: an Ohana award from Jujitsu America , Presidential Awards for Distinguished Service by JA in 1997, 1999, 2000, and 2001, and was co-recipient of the Wally Jay Award. At Ohana 2001 in Hawaii she received the Samuel S. Luke Distinguished Service Award from the AJI.

Sue is a graphic artist, and is former editor of the Jujitsu America national newsletter. She recently accepted the position of co-editor of the AJI newsletter. She is also the Secretary for the Danzan Ryu Jujitsu Kodenkan Alliance that encompasses all jujitsu organizations practicing the arts of Danzan Ryu worldwide.
