Fluorescent Light Bulbs
The 23 watt Westpointe™ Compact Fluorescent (CFL) bulbs we use replace a typical 100 watt standard incandescent light bulb. We use ENERGY STAR qualified light bulbs in the bedrooms, common spaces, and bathrooms of each residence hall and apartment-style unit. They are also used to provide light for our office spaces on the 1st and 3rd floors of A Building.
T8 Fluorescent Ballasts
Five years ago, we replaced all of our T12 Ballasts with T8 Ballasts, which use 70% as much energy. Ballasts convert electricity into a charge that can be used by fluorescent tubes and bulbs. 30% less may not seem like that much less, but the fluorescent tubes in the residence halls are usually on 24 hours a day, and when the number of tubes and the amount of time they are on are taken into account, the dollar amount of energy saved is significant.
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Flat Screen Monitors
Our ENERGY STAR qualified Gateway High Definition Display Flat Screen Monitors use around 70% less energy than the monitors they replaced. 19 inch LCD monitors use 38 watts, as opposed to the 135 watts used by a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor of the same size.
EcoGreen 100% Recycled Toilet Paper
RAD Facilities provides Green Seal™ Certified toilet paper in the public restrooms on the third floor of A-Building and in the Housing Community Center (HCC.) Toilet paper is also provided for students who are part of the Education First language program. More information about Green Seal Certification can be found at the Green Seal website at www.greenseal.org. We receive our toilet products from American Paper Converting at www.americanpaperco.com, a local company in Woodland, Washington.
EcoSoft™ 100% Recycled Tissues
The Residential and Dining Services offices use 100% recycled facial tissues. We purchase our products from Wausaupaper Corporation. Their EcoSoft™ facial tissues have the same Green Seal™ Certification as the toilet paper that we use.
Duplex Printing
The HP Laserjet 4250 on the third floor prints on both sides of paper, which effectively nearly halves the amount of paper we use for Check-In Packets, Lock Change Forms, Billing Appeals, and all other paperwork.
Recycled Paper
We use 100% Post Consumer recycled paper from Grays Harbor Paper. Gray Harbor Paper is a Green-e certified renewable energy company, which uses mostly wood waste that would otherwise be thrown away to fuel their paper production process. Their manufacturing process is also chlorine free, which helps prevent undesirable effects to the environment.
Online Applications
We have now changed our applications to a completely online process, eliminating the over 1,000 2-page paper applications we used to receive on an annual basis.
