Sustainability @ RAD
The development of a waste free and energy efficient community is of paramount importance to RAD Services. In 2008, RAD Services established the RAD Sustainability Program, which is managed by two “Sustainabilibuddies”. The Sustainabilibuddies are student employees who devote their working hours to improving the sustainability of lower campus through design, implementation and maintenance of innovative “Green” projects.
Sustainability: One Step At A Time
The RAD Sustainability Program has implemented a number of energy saving projects, some of which are tried and true and some of which are experimental. In addition to reducing the carbon footprint of lower campus, these projects allow RAD to evaluate the efficiency of different projects and determine which ones are the most effective. While most of these projects are funded by the Clean Energy Committee, the Sustainabilibuddies try to keep the cost of these projects low enough that an individual homeowner could potentially afford to incorporate the same design on their property; after all, concern for the environment is a global issue. The following projects have been pursued by RAD Sustainability:
- Water Meters in The Soup
- Comparative Solar Hot Water System
- Experimental Compost Heat Recovery System
- The Bike Share Program
- Community Gardens
- LED Lighting
- In-Floor Radiant Heat
- Water Catchment Systems
- Energy Efficiency
- Sustainability Housing
Living a Greener Life
Living sustainably is a large part of life on The Evergreen Campus. The following links provide more information and resources to assist you in your pursuit for Greener Pastures.
RAD Times is a lower campus Newsletter that focuses on the activies of RAD Services and is colored by sustainability interests. The first edition was published on November 30th, 2011, with subsequent editions coming out roughly once a month. The goal of RAD times is to keep students, staff and upper campus informed regarding RAD projects and activities, as well as opening a line of communication with the student body. We hope you enjoy it!
Issues:
Sustainable Facilities
Our residential facilities are designed with sustainability in mind! From our recycled wood flooring to the dual-flush toilets, our facilities workers strive to increase the usage sustainable, local and recyclable materials. Please visit Green Housing to learn more!
Additionally, RAD exclusively uses green products when they clean because they are more economic, effective, and non-toxic. They also encourage all residents to do the same! Please visit Green Cleaning to learn more about green cleaning products and how to make your own low-VOC products.
Doing Your Part
RAD Services is dedicated to providing education, training and materials to help residents live an environmentally conscious, socially just, and sustainable lifestyle. Our staff - from our facilities student workers to your Resident Assistant - are trained to help you learn how to reduce waste, sort your recycling, compost and lower your carbon footprint. Our Greener Tips also have some excellent methods for increasing your personal sustainability.
One large way you can contribute to our collective sustainability initiatives is to be sustainable during move-in and check-out in housing. As you prepare to move into campus housing or move out of it, there are a number of things you can do to reduce unnecessary waste and increase your energy efficiency. Please read our Sustainable Check In & Check Out Guide for more information and helpful checklists!
For more information or to get involved, contact RADsustainability@evergreen.edu. RAD is always looking for volunteers and students with independent project to help us promote sustainability education in the residence hall.
