Asbestos Safety

Asbestos is present in the material on the textured ceilings of buildings B and C and the Mods. This material, Chrysotile, contains 5-8 percent asbestos. The inhalation of asbestos can have serious health effects. Presently the Chrysotile is encapsulated by multiple layers of paint and does not pose a danger if left undisturbed.

You are prohibited from stapling, tacking, drilling or impacting the ceiling in any way that can cause the asbestos to be exposed. If you do damage or notice damage to your ceilings contact the Housing Office at 360.867.6132. Chrysotile is removed when we renovate buildings

Lead Paint

Buildings A, B, C and D were built in 1971; the Mods were built in 1973. They may contain lead-based paint. Lead from paint, paint chips and paint dust can pose health hazards if not managed properly. Lead exposure is especially harmful to young children and pregnant women.

The hazard associated with properly managed lead paint is relatively low. Housing has chosen to encapsulate rather than remove the material. This strategy is consistent with federal and state regulations.
