Student Employment in Housing

Residential and Dining Services is one of the largest employers of students on campus.

Seasonal custodial staff is hired at the beginning of fall quarter and again in spring quarter for the end-of-year clean-up. Resident Assistants for the following year are hired during winter quarter.

Positions are posted online at Student Employment as they become available throughout the year.

Custodian

Student custodial workers provide a wide range of cleaning services from routine cleaning of public areas to cleaning rooms at the end of each quarter. They also have the opportunity to learn basic grounds work, basic auxiliary, and basic maintenance. Residential and Dining Services provides ongoing training for custodians. Experience in cleaning is preferred but not required.

Front Office Assistant

This position provides clerical and receptionist support in the Residential and Dining Services Office. Applicants should have strong administrative skills including word processing, filing and updating and maintaining records. Customer service skills with attention to detail and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to remain professional and pleasant, particularly in high stress situations, are desirable. Experience in office/reception work is preferred but not required.

Grounds

The grounds staff provides year-round maintenance to all of Housing's grounds. They operate a variety of power and hand tools and work in all weather conditions. Experience with grounds maintenance is preferred but not required.

Linen

The linen staff provides year-round linen services (washing, folding, exchanges) for the EF student program as well as full linen services for the summer conference guests. They operate and maintain the linen room, including washer and dryer. Residential and Dining Services provides ongoing training for folding, stacking, linen room and exchange procedures.

Maintenance

Student maintenance workers provide a wide range of repair services from replacing light bulbs to renovation projects. Housing provides ongoing training in drywall repair, basic electrical repairs, plumbing, appliance repair and heating/ventilation systems. Student maintenance workers also perform full-scale building remodels throughout the year. Experience in any of the building or repair trades is preferred but not required.

Resident Assistant

The principal goal of the live-in Resident Assistant is to aid in building a healthy residential community, defined as an environment that fosters healthy lifestyle choices by its members, respect for individual values and beliefs, a sense of belonging and a focus on academic success.

Resident Assistants answer questions about Residential and Dining Services contracts, facilitate roommate meetings and make referrals for residents who may be experiencing academic, personal or emotional challenges. Resident Assistants provide educational, cultural and social activities while serving as role models in the Housing community.

Resident Assistants confront and document policy violations, provide walkthroughs and respond to all emergencies in Housing. Students with experience in student leadership and strong interpersonal skills are encouraged to apply.

Resident Maintenance

The live-in Resident Maintenance positions provide emergency maintenance services during evenings and weekends. They also work day-time maintenance shifts with RAD Facilities. Experience in any of the building or repair trades is preferred but not required.

ResTech

ResTechs, or residential technologists, provide support for staff and resident computers, help maintain the network connections in Residential and Dining Services, assist with cable and phone services,maintain the resnet blog, and develop web applications to help Residential and Dining Services manage information. 

Excellent interpersonal communication skills, knowledge of programming and database concepts, and a strong drive to learn are job requirements.
