Components of the PLE Program
- Writing From Life course
- This course is offered for 4 credits in the fall, winter and spring quarters.
- A faculty signature is required to register for Writing from Life. Contact Kate Crowe, faculty for Writing from Life, at (360) 867-6415.
- This course is a prerequisite for acceptance into the PLE Program.
- Students do not have to be admitted to Evergreen to register for this course.
- In this course, students will explore meaning and learning from life experience, develop and strengthen their writing skills, work collaboratively with peer critique and feedback, determine and clarify learning objectives and outcomes, and explore PLE academic potential with a PLE Faculty Advisor.
- Credit will be awarded in personal essay writing.
- PLE Document Writing course
- To register for the PLE Document Writing course, students need to be admitted to Evergreen, complete the Writing from Life course, receive a recommendation from Kate Crowe, and submit a PLE Program application to the Dean of Evening and Weekend Studies, Russell Fox. The Dean's signature is required for registration. Contact his assistant, Caroline Tawes, at (360) 867-6864 for additional information.
- This course is offered for 4 or 8 credits per quarter in the fall, winter and spring quarters.
- PLE students must take this course for a minimum of 8 credits and a cumulative maximum of 16 credits.
- The PLE document must be completed while registered in this course.
- Course faculty and the student's PLE Faculty Advisor will determine the equivalencies for work completed in this course, usually in writing and/or appropriate content titles for essays completed.
- Credit for this course will be awarded and posted each quarter.
- PLE Document
- Autobiography (no more that 5 pages)
- Resume (2 pages)
- PLE descriptive outline (2-5 pages)
- Essays on particular subject areas where credit is requested. Demonstration of learning rather than description of activities (8-10 pages for each 8 credits requested)
- Synthesis Essay (3-5 pages)
- Bibliography
- Appendices (project material if needed)
- Students will complete their PLE document while registered in the PLE Document Writing course. In this document, students will demonstrate college-level learning gained from life experiences. The PLE document will consist of a collection of autobiographical and expository essays, related research, a synthesis essay and, if appropriate, supporting appendices.
- Students have 4 consecutive quarters (not including summer quarter) to complete their PLE document.
- During their enrollment in the PLE Document Writing course and after receiving advice from their faculty, students may decide to request additional credit (beyond the 16 credits earned in the PLE Document Writing course) for their finished document. Additional credit (29 additional credits beyond 16, up to a maximum of 45 credits) may be requested by submitting the document to the student's PLE Faculty Advisor and/or additional faculty for review and evaluation.
- These faculty will complete their review and evaluation by week 6 of the quarter following completion of the PLE document.
- Upon award of credit above the 16 earned in the PLE Document Writing course, students will be billed for tuition for the additional credits.
