The Evergreen State College and Evergreen Expressions are pleased to announce

An evening of films and conversation with legendary Russian animation master, Yuri Norstein

Still from Hedgehog in the FogIn his animated films, Yuri Norstein employs characters and stories from Russian folklore and literature to eloquently depict the human condition. His works are poetic, transcending cultural and generational boundaries and yielding layered meanings and emotions.  Norstein’s hand-made, cutout animation technique is also multi-layered. He deftly animates beautifully rendered characters and backgrounds on multiple planes of glass to create effects of three dimensional space and filtered and reflective light.  Known as "the Pushkin of animation", Norstein's films have won countless awards at prestigious film festivals around the world and his critical acclaim in the international animation community equals that of Disney, Lasseter, and Miyazaki. At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Arts Festival, Norstein's Tale of Tales was voted the "Greatest Animated Film of All Time" by an international jury.

The screening will include a retrospective of Norstein’s films:
  • Tale of Tales
  • Hedgehog in the Fog
  • Heron and the Crane

as well as a preview of his feature film work in progress based on Gogol's "The Overcoat".
