Evergreen's Dan Evans Chair gives public presentation on law, religion

Center offers students a variety of evening programs

Professor Peter Irons, a popular author and distinguished Supreme Court and constitutional scholar will give a public lecture at The Evergreen State College's Communications Building Recital Hall Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.

Irons is Evergreen's Daniel J. Evans Chair in Liberal Arts, a chair program that honors Dan Evans, the former Washington governor, U.S. senator and the college's second president.

The presentation will be based on Professor Irons’ upcoming book, God on Trial: America's Growing Religious Wars, that investigates the social, political and legal conflicts over the place of religion in American society. An audience question and answer session will follow.

Irons has had a career as a scholar and authority on the Supreme Court, and constitutional law and litigation. He has written and edited more than a dozen books, and has earned an unprecedented five Silver Gavel Awards, the American Bar Association’s highest honor. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Boston University and a law degree from Harvard Law School.
