Will I lose emails that I want to receive because of the spam filter?

Although we have been careful to tune our SPAM filter to minimize the risk of false positives, there is still a chance that legitimate mail may be marked as SPAM. It is important to periodically monitor your Junk E-mail folder for these false positives.

Items older than 30 days in your junk email folder will automatically be deleted.

More detail on configuring anti-spam options can be found the Technical Support Services web site:

How does the SPAM filter decide what is SPAM?

There are a few rules you should know:

  1. The SPAM filter only filters messages that are sent from outside of the Evergreen’s campus network.
  2. The SPAM filter will not mark messages from senders that you have included in your Outlook or Webmail Contacts Lists as SPAM.
  3. The SPAM filter will not mark messages from addresses you have identified as Safe Senders using Webmail or Outlook 2003 as SPAM.
  4. The SPAM filter will mark all messages from addresses you have identified as Junk senders using web email or Outlook 2003 as SPAM.

Aside from these rules, messages are examined and classified by many criteria, including keywords, message formats, sending and receiving email address format etc.

Additionally, Evergreen subscribes to a free blocking service which blocks known wholesale unsolicited senders sometimes called “SPAM Gangs”. Messages from these hosts are blocked immediately and will not be filed in your junk email folders.

Additional information regarding our blocking service can be found at their web site at:

http://www.spamhaus.org.

I don’t use the Outlook 2003. Will the SPAM filter still work?

Yes. Our email servers automatically file spam messages into your “Junk E-mail” folder, which can be accessed via any email client, however unless you are using Outlook 2003, safe senders and blocked senders lists must be managed using web email at:

http://www.evergreen.edu/webmail

I’m still getting too much spam! What can I do?

Since there is one set of spam settings for everyone in the Evergreen community, there’s not much that can be done to eliminate span without increasing the risk of losing email to other users. The newest version of Outlook for PCs and Entourage for Mac will include additional filtering capabilities that users can adjust to help reduce the amount of Junk E-mail delivered to your inbox. Technical Support Services will be making these email programs available for install within the next year.

How long does Evergreen keep junk email?

Items older than 30 days in your Junk E-mail folder will automatically be deleted.
