Discina perlata , Pig's Ears, is one of the snowbank fungi of western mountains and often occurs with Gyromitra montana , G. esculenta , and morels. Discina perlata is closely related to Gyromitra montana and sometimes can look somewhat similar. I have gathered it in abundance when morel hunting was disappointing, but my classes have not found it too exciting at the dinner table. There are many similar Discina species which are only distinguishable with a microscope. All appear to be edible when thoroughly cooked. However, since look-alike Gyromitra species may contain monomethyl hydrazine and since the flavor of this is not outstanding anyway, I no longer eat Discina perlata . .
