Slide 30.
Boletus erythropus which has also been known as Boletus amygdalinus has distinctive red tube mouths and stains blue when bruised. Boletus erythropus is regarded as a choice edible species, but my rule is to not eat any red-tubed boletes and not eat boletes that bruise blue. Consumption of several different red-tubed boletes has produced mild gastrointestinal distress and there was one fatality from Boletus pulcherrimus. Like Boletus erythropus, Boletus pulcherrimus is a beautiful red-tubed, blue-staining bolete. In addition to problems with some of the red-tubed boletes, many of the blue-staining boletes are very bitter and some cause gastrointestinal distress as well, though sometimes only in association with the consumption of alcohol. While some blue-staining boletes are good to eat, these are not mushrooms for the novice collector or the faint of heart.
