Reading Endorsement Sequence and Scheduling
Evergreen’s Master in Teaching Program is happy to announce that Washington's Professional Educator Standards Board has approved a new reading endorsement program at The Evergreen State College. The five courses in the sequence will be offered over two summer quarters beginning in 2009 and 2010. The sequence will then be repeated in the summers of 2011 and 2012 and every two summers thereafter.
Foundations of Literacy and Research in Literacy will be offered in the first summer. In the second summer Instructional Methods and Assessment in Reading will be offered. Children’s Literature and Adolescent Literature are offered every summer; participants will need to choose one or the other to complete the sequence. Click here for the course credit outline.
Summer 2009 Scheduling. The Foundations of Literacy and Research in Literacy courses for the reading endorsement will be the first session of summer school, June 22-July 24. One course will be M&W 5:30-9:30 pm, the other Tu&Th 5:30-9:30 pm. If you are interested in the Adolescent literature course, it will be listed as full session, but meet the first five Monday mornings of the summer, and the rest will be done by submitting work on-line. If you are interested in children's literature, The Enjoying Children's Literature will meet once a week for five weeks the first session of summer school, the Special Topics in Children's Literature will meet once the second session of summer school and the rest of it will be on-line.
At the conclusion of the sequence, teachers and candidates in teacher preparation programs must take and pass the Reading WEST E, a state-required standardized test, and apply to have the endorsement added to their teaching certificates.
The classes are also open to paraprofessionals, people interested in becoming teachers, and individuals interested in the development and teaching of reading.
