Admissions Tests: WEST-B and WEST-E

Passing a basic skills assessment (reading, writing and mathematics) and passing one or more specific content area assessments is required for completion of all Washington-approved teacher preparation programs.

WEST B - Washington Educator Skills Test - Basic

Passing all sections of the basic skills assessment (WEST-B) is required for admission to the MIT program. The WEST-B is administered by the National Evaluation Systems, Inc. The WEST-B consists of three separate sub-tests: Reading, Writing and Mathematics. The state-determined minimum passing score is 240 out of 300 points on each of the three WEST B sections. You must pass all three sections of the WEST-B to be admitted to the MIT program. It will be given seven times during the 2008-09 academic year. The cost for taking WEST-B is $85 ($10 registration fee and $25 per sub-test). You can find detailed information about the test and about registration at the West information website.

MIT applicants from out of state who have taken another basic skills exam (Praxis I PPST, Praxis I CBT, or CBEST) may instead provide official documentation of earning passing scores. For more information, see the Professional Educator Standards Board website.

WEST E - Washington Educator Skills Tests - Endorsements

Passing a content area assessment (WEST-E) for each endorsement area is also required for admission to the MIT program. The WEST E tests will be given seven times during the 2008-2009 academic year by National Evaluation Systems Inc. the same company giving the WEST B. The cost for taking the WEST-E includes a $10 registration fee and a $120 fee per test or $60 per subtest for Elementry Eduation and Middle Level Humanities. For WEST-E test dates, registration information, and content outlines go to the West website. There are five testing location outside of Washington for out of state applicants.

If you have extenuating circumstances regarding your ability to take the WEST-E please contact the MIT advisor before submitting your application to the MIT program and as soon as possible.

For Fall 2009 MIT applicants, take the new WEST-E tests offered by National Evaluations Systems beginning 9/1/08 for all endorsements (except Special Education, French, German, and Spanish take Praxis II from www.ets.org/praxis and for Japanese take the ACTFL oral interview from www.languagetesting.com

For Fall 2010 or later MIT applicants, take the new WEST-E tests for all endorsements.
