Master of Environmental Studies

Student Profile

Kyli Rhoads, MES 2012, Sustainability Education & Restoration Ecology

Kyli Rhoads, MES 1st Year 2012

Where are you from?
Stillwater, Oklahoma originally. I have been living in Bremerton, WA for the last three years now.

What drew you to the MES program at The Evergreen State College?
When I went to take the campus tour prior to applying, I was very moved by everyone’s open-mindedness and genuine interest in learning. I had never been in a learning environment that I felt truly suited me, but I’d never seen or heard of any different style of education until Evergreen. Evergreen’s multidisciplinary approach and close relationships with faculty and fellow students was the biggest reason I chose this school.

What is your previous education and work experience prior to entering the MES Program?
My undergraduate degree is a B.S. from Oklahoma State University in Health Promotion and Education. I’ve been a medical receptionist for the last five years while earning my pre-requisites needed for the graduate program.

What are you areas of interest in the MES program?
Public Education on Sustainability, Sustainable Agriculture, and Restoration Ecology.

What activities do you enjoy outside of school and work?
Spending time with my fiancé, Photography, Reading, Hiking, Camping, and playing with our Australian Shepherd, Hank.

What do you hope to gain from the MES program?
A well-rounded education on environmental topics and the ability to think more openly and creatively about our environmental issues, and hopefully, come up with some solutions to our current and future environmental problems.

What is your “dream occupation”?  What do you see yourself doing after the MES program?
I would like to pursue a career in Sustainable Development with a college or city, Public Education on Sustainability or Restoration Ecology.

Who has been an inspirational individual in your life?
I would say my Grandmother Anne has been my biggest inspiration. She taught me a sense of adventure and courage that let me move across the country to pursue school, leaving behind everything I’ve ever known; a mind-set to work hard and never, ever give up trying; and she’s given me my desire to achieve something I am passionate about and can be proud of.

Anything super interesting that you think prospective and current students should know about you!
I love to be friends with anybody and everybody! Come say hi and introduce yourself!
