  Finding Guide

The Periodicals & Reference Databases page is the portal to our electronic resources, databases, internet resources, online databases or whatever terms one chooses to use.

Remember you are not searching the databases themselves but selecting databases to search.

This page allows 5 ways to find databases to search:

1. Browse an alphabetical list - You can locate a database title you know by using this browse function, where the they are arranged alphabetically by title, or simply use it to see what's available.

2. Search by Database Title - If you know the name of the database you are looking for, you can use this search. It's like searching for a book by title.

3. Search by Database Subject - You can come up with your own subject to bring up a list of databases to use. Check the list under Periodical & Reference Databases by Narrow subject first. The subject you're looking for may already be listed there.

If you want only full-text databases to be returned by your search, add full-text to your search terms.

4. Periodical & Reference Databases by Broad Subject - This lists all the databases in very broad subjects, i.e., all science databases are under science, all social science databases are under social sciences. They are then broken down by whether they are a full-text, an indexing & abstracting, or a reference database.

It's often helpful to search one of the multidisciplinary databases, such as JSTOR or Ebsco's Academic Search Complete, as a complement to using databases with a narrower focus.

5. Periodical & Reference Databases by Narrow Subject - Databases are grouped by narrow subjects. For example, instead of Social Sciences, you have subjects that would fall under the larger category broken down into smaller ones, such as anthropology, history, psychology, social work etc.

Don't expect to find a very narrow subject in this list. For instance, if you are looking for information on Stellar Jays, don't expect to find Stellar Jays as a separate listing…but you can find the information you need by searching under Ornithology.
