Evergreen's
Library - A Community
Resource
The Evergreeen State
College Library is a
dynamic organization
with facilities, resources
and staff dedicated
to excellent service
for both the Evergreen
campus and the surrounding
communities. The library
is such a valuable community
resource that nearly
a third of its users
are non-students. With
a collection of more
than 240,000 volumes,
many computerized data
bases, 1600 journals
and magazines, and extended
hours of operation,
the Library has much
to offer people in and
around Thurston County.
The
Library is more than
its collection. Whenever
the Library is open,
the reference staff
is there to answer questions
and, more important,
to help people find
their own answers.
The
Media Center is also
available, with excellent
facilities and services
such as VCR stations,
audio tape dubbing and
slide previewing, all
provided with basic
assistance from staff
to help users get started.
The
college archive, many
musical and spoken cassettes
and the rare books collection
all await campus and
community patrons as
well.
Friends
of the Evergreen State
College Library works
to support this great
community resource.
The Friends organizes
programs and events
to bring the campus
and the community together.
The Friends also holds
regular membership meetings
in conjunction with
readings, and work to
raise funds to help
the Library provide
the best service possible
for both campus users
and the surrounding
community. This becomes
especially important
at a time when competiton
for state funds is intensifying,
and the Library is challenged
to maintain its high
standards with increasingly
limited resources.
Through
its membership dues
and fund-raising activities,
the Friends has been
able to contribute $15,000
to the Library Endowment
Fund.
Resources
derived through fund-raising
activities are targeted
to needs such as:
1.
Increasing the library's
collection in areas
known to require greater
depth (such as multicultural
materials, environmental
studies, foreign language
materials, management
studies and video and
film materials);
2.
Purchasing automated
and media equipment;
3.
Supporting the college
archive; and
4.
Funding special one-time
projects such as cataloging
the extensive audio
recording collection.
