I. Reservation-based program students can have materials from the library mailed directly to their homes. Click here for instructions.

II. Use the TESC Library Catalog and SUMMIT, the regional (Oregon & Washington) academic library borrowing service (for TESC students, staff and faculty only), for basic library searches in Native American and American Indian topics.

    Search Tips:
    a. Go to http://evergreen.edu/library and click on Library Catalog
    b. Search one or more terms using keywords (try others if you have no luck, add related ideas to limit the search if you get too many results)
    c. Bring up a list of book titles
    d. Select one title OR if you didn’t find any good books, use another or a more general term
    e. If you find a title of a book that looks perfect, look at the subjects listed further down the page: EXAMPLE: keyword search "adult learners" brings up a list of books that includes Women as Learners. Scrolling down the page, you find Subjects
    and the first subject is
    Adult Learning)
    f. Click on the subject headings that match your topic and see if you get an additional, more accurate, list. EXAMPLE: clicking on "Adult Learning" in the page above will bring up a list of titles. Click on the titles to bring up a record for the book. Click on "Request" if you want the book sent to you.

For more books, Search the Summit collection (30+ academic libraries in Washington and Oregon):

From the Evergreen catalog, click on the button marked Summit. Repeat the search strategy you did for the Evergreen catalog. For each book you want, click Request this Item and you will be asked for your institution (Evergreen), your student ID number, and where you want to pick up the book (list Olympia, because that's where we'll received it and mail it on to you).
  • Reference Area Resources:  When on campus, see  The Dictionary of Indian Tribes of the Americas  REF E54.5.D53,  Encyclopedia of Indians of the Americas REF E54.5.E52, Reference Library of Native North America  REF E 76.2.N377.  Use these scholarly sources to get an overview of your topic and find key words, concepts and individuals you want to use as search terms, whether in the library catalog, in the WWWeb or in indexes and other reference sources.

III. Government Documents:  Use the TESC Government Documents homepage to get to State, Federal, and tribal resources and sites. Contact TESC's Government Documents Specialist, Carlos Diaz, at (360) 867-6251  for search assistance.

IV.  Journal and Newspaper articles:
(available through the Evergreen Library Homepages--not though WWWeb general searches. You'll need to provide your name and current student ID number in order to get into these databases)

Start from the title search page and search the following journal databases which have the complete text of articles about subjects across the curriculum:

Proquest

HW WILSON

Ebscohost (Academic Search Elite)

Ethnic Newswatch

JSTOR

There are many more journal indexes available on more specific disciplines and topics which you can find by browsing the Reference & Journals Full-Text Journals and Indexing pages. Call, e-mail or stop by and consult with your library contact or contact the reference desk: (360)867-6252 to find out what will work best for your research.
