Library Purchase RequestsThe library encourages patrons to make suggestions of material you would like our library to acquire. Of course, our budget is limited and we may not be able to purchase all suggestions.
The Acquisitions Department orders most of the library's material through vendors. The vendors supply us with material from many publishers. We negotiate discounts and terms with the vendors. Then we select the vendor that can supply the material we seek at the best price and with the best turn-around time.
When a patron request that we "rush" an order we need to determine what that means and how it will impact the budget for library material. It takes an average of six to eight weeks for us to receive an order from a vendor. After the material is received, it must be processed, cataloged and made ready for the shelves. If we go directly to a publisher to acquire the material or purchase it from the college bookstore, it may shorten the time it takes to get it in the hands of the patron, but we often lose our discount and pay extra for special handling. The special handling in the Acquisitions Department also takes more acquisitions staff time.
The patron can help us stretch our budget by making requests as early as possible. The patron can also help by giving us an accurate picture of when the material is needed and when it will no longer be of use. The Interlibrary Loan Borrowing Department is also available to help patrons secure material that is available at another library.
Patrons should begin by
checking the library's
online catalog, to make sure that the library does not already
own a copy of the title they are requesting.
If you choose to email your suggestion or use the library online catalog request form, please include as much information as possible. The following is helpful to expedite your order: title, author, publisher, date of publication, place of publication, your name, address, if you would like to be notified, and date you need the material. Faculty should also inform us if they want the material for a program, the name of the program, and if they would like it placed on reserve.
If you have suggestions of material which the
library should purchase, you may fill out a Library Purchase Request form
at the Reference Desk in the library, or you may email to Shelley Swelland
in Acquisitions at swellans@elwha.evergreen.edu,
or use the web
purchase
request form.
