Got Food? Thank a Farmworker!
NATIONAL WEEK OF ACTION HIGHLIGHTS FARMWORKER STRUGGLES. On-Campus Event:Dialogue for Farmworker's Justice: Countering Opression in the Food SystemThursday April 3rd, 200811:00 am -1:00 pm Bellingham farm workers, collaborating with Community to Community Development, have formed an organic farm cooperative. They will speak about their experiences in the fields before and after the coop's formation. This event is free and open to the public. Sponsored by: the Community Center for Learning and Action; the Labor Education & Research Center; Academic programs Seeds of Change, Political Economy, and Bridges Not Walls; MEChA; and the Olympia Food Co-op. Stop the Servitude! The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) is launching a national petition drive to demand that Burger King and other food industry leaders work with the CIW to improve the wages and working conditions of the workers who pick their tomatoes. They need to join with the CIW in an industry-wide effort to eliminate human rights abuses from Florida’s fields. Click here for more information on the campaign, and to sign the petition, which will serve as notice that those who sign are “prepared to stop patronizing Burger King now, and other food industry leaders in the future, should they fail to do so.” TO HONOR CESAR CHAVEZ AND ALL FARMWORKERS, PEOPLE IN 27 STATES ARE CALLING FOR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO MAKE HIS BIRTHDAY ON MARCH 31ST A NATIONAL HOLIDAY. Nationwide movement calls for improved living standards, stronger voice in industry and increased workplace protections for farmworkers. Organizations across the country are hosting a week of action to bring attention to the plight of farmworkers in the United States. Advocates, religious leaders, students, labor activists, consumers and environmental health professionals will unite during the week to recognize the contribution of agricultural workers. Farm work is one of the most strenuous and dangerous occupations, and yet farmworkers are excluded from many of the labor protections that other workers enjoy. They lack the right to collectively bargain, are vulnerable to employer retaliation, often live in substandard housing and suffer the highest risk of work-related exposure to pesticides and other hazardous chemicals. Each year, Farmworker Awareness Week is called by Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) in collaboration with Student Labor Action Project’s Week of Action. The purpose of the week is to inform the public and highlight ongoing campaigns for the improvement of farmworkers' living and working conditions. Please join us in raising awareness about the struggles of these hardworking people.
