Spotlight: The Sustainability in Prisons Project
Connecting Prisons With Nature
A partnership between The Evergreen State College and Washington State Department of Corrections
The Sustainability in Prisons Project (SPP) is a groundbreaking partnership between The Evergreen State College and the Washington State Department of Corrections to reduce the environmental, economic and human costs of prisons. SPP collaborates with faculty, students, corrections staff, inmates and many additional partners to bring science, nature, and sustainable practices inside the prison fence. The project works to engage inmates in meaningful programs, provide education, enhance career possibilities, and reduce recidivism. At the same time, SPP expands and enhances educational opportunities for Evergreen students and faculty. SPP is helping to transform prisons into models for sustainable living. It has also offered benefits to regional conservation efforts and community organizations, and shifted public perceptions of what prisons can contribute to society in Washington State.
