The Financial Aid Process for Graduate Students

The process of attaining the funds to cover school and living costs is similar for graduate students and undergraduates. One big difference is that as a graduate student, whatever your age, marital status or living situation, you will not need to provide information about your parent(s) and they will not sign your FAFSA, so you will not need a PIN for them even if you did when you were an undergraduate. Follow these steps:

  1. Get your PIN number.
If you filed previously, have your PIN in hand.
If this is your first time filing a FAFSA, or if you can't find your PIN number, apply for one at the PIN Site.
  2. Download and complete a FAFSA Worksheet.
This enables you to get together all the information you will need to complete the online FAFSA.
Please be aware that you are allowed to file a FAFSA even before you have filed taxes. We encourage you to estimate the information if you have not filed yet. Go back and revise your information after your taxes have been submitted.
  3. Complete the FAFSA online.
Plug the information from your worksheet into the online form and sign it with your PIN number. There is also an option to print out a signature page from the FAFSA site after submitting your information.
If you are unable to file an online FAFSA, you can request a paper FAFSA or pick one up at the financial aid office.
  4. Read and sign the Evergreen Financial Aid Data Sheet and return it to us.

The earlier in the year that you complete these four steps, the better. Evergreen's priority deadline is March 15th. This means that to have your file reviewed in the first awarding cycle, we must receive your complete and valid FAFSA information before March 15th. It does not mean that you will be unable to receive financial aid next year if you do not meet the deadline, but in order to receive the best possible aid, and to know at the earliest possible date (for planning purposes) what your offer will be, make sure that your FAFSA information gets to us by March 15th.

General information about How to Apply for Financial Aid.

What kinds of Financial Aid are available for graduate students?

Remember that your first step is to talk with the graduate program you are interested in.

Gift Aid

Eligible Washington state residents may be offered Washington State Tuition Waivers (STW) or Evergreen Need Grants (ENG).

Employment

Graduate students will find opportunities to work on the Evergreen campus and in the community through the Student Employment Office.

Graduate students with need may be offered the opportunity to participate in work study programs. Some opportunities for non-need based campus employment are also available.

Loans

Loans require the borrower to repay the amount borrowed plus any accrued interest. Loans vary in interest from 5% to 12% and may offer certain deferment options.

Most students who qualify for financial aid, particularly out-of-state residents, find it necessary to borrow funds through the loan programs in order to meet the cost of attending Evergreen.

As a graduate student you may qualify for a Subsidized or Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, a Perkins Loan, a graduate PLUS Loan, and/or a private 'alternative' loan.
