Visiting Faculty Position

Geology Faculty - 10

Visiting Faculty position, full time for winter & spring quarters 2010.

The Evergreen State College invites applications from broadly trained earth scientists with the ability to teach introductory physical geology. The successful applicant will teach a 2-quarter interdisciplinary program with a physical chemist titled, Earth Matters: Geology and Chemistry (http://www.evergreen.edu/catalog/2009-10/programs/earthmattersgeologyandchemistry).

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong curiosity about the natural world, excellence in teaching, and enthusiasm for working with undergraduate students in an interdisciplinary environment.  That candidate will have a strong emphasis in field studies, as well as classroom and laboratory settings.  Geology is a key aspect of a liberal arts education.  Important features that geologists bring to general education are very different concepts of time and unique ways of looking at evidence.  By its nature, geology has strong ties to chemistry, physics, biology, and other fields of study within a liberal arts college that involve human interactions with the physical environment.

The Evergreen campus is located on 1000 acres of forested land (primarily Douglas fir regrowth) at the southern end of Puget Sound (70 miles from Seattle), with easy access to Mount Rainier National Park, Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument, and Olympic National Park.

ABOUT EVERGREEN

Evergreen is a non-traditional public liberal arts college emphasizing intensive interdisciplinary study and collaborative team-teaching throughout the undergraduate curriculum and in three graduate programs. Teaching is the central work of the faculty at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Recognizing cultural diversity as a defining characteristic of the 21st century, the college has intensified its efforts to become a multicultural institution. Substantive experience working across cultural differences is therefore highly desirable for all positions. Committed to equal opportunity and affirmative action, Evergreen is working to build a diverse, broadly trained faculty. We particularly encourage applications from candidates whose race, national origin, sex, age, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, veteran status or physical disability will contribute to our diversity.

Successful teaching at Evergreen requires broad-ranging intellectual curiosity and the ability to formulate interdisciplinary questions with faculty colleagues and students. Faculty membership is unranked with salary determined on a non-competitive, open scale based on earned degrees and years of relevant experience.

Evergreen's fundamental academic commitments are summarized in the Five Foci:
  • Interdisciplinary study
