Regular Faculty Position

Sustainable Design - 10

The Evergreen State College seeks a broadly capable designer, artist or design-oriented engineer to teach sustainable design in a setting of team-taught, interdisciplinary programs which evolve from year to year, and are full time for both faculty and students. A strong candidate will have a record of creative practical experience, demonstrated commitment and ability in teaching sustainable design/construction or environmental art forms, the capacity to bridge between these fields and environmental studies, and understanding and ability to address community and environmental justice in relation to sustainability.

The candidate's field might be architecture, landscape architecture; construction technologies; engineering; land-use, transportation, energy, or resource systems design; restoration and preservation of natural and built environments; industrial or product design; public art; or environmental art and sculpture.  S/he should be grounded in the history, theory, and practice of design in environmental and social contexts, and be knowledgeable in the applied sciences relative to his or her specialty area. S/he should be prepared to lead an undergraduate design studio, and to teach sustainable design as a rigorous and creative investigative and problem solving process employing a suitable mix of fieldwork, research, analysis, graphic visualization and modeling, hands-on construction, communication, and writing skills.

Opportunities exist locally for collaboration with community organizations. Evergreen encourages student, campus and community engagement in creating, designing and building in sustainable ways, and welcomes a candidate who is prepared to take a leadership role in such efforts.

ABOUT EVERGREEN

Evergreen is a progressive public liberal arts college emphasizing integrated interdisciplinary study and collaborative team-teaching throughout the undergraduate curriculum and in three graduate programs. Teaching at Evergreen allows faculty members to exercise broad-ranging intellectual curiosity and to work collaboratively with faculty colleagues and students formulating interdisciplinary questions and inquiry.

Faculty members team-teach in full-time interdisciplinary programs. With their teaching colleagues they collaboratively design thematically centered programs that bring together multiple disciplines. Faculty teams also strive to address core academic experiences we believe should be included in all programs: teaching writing and quantitative reasoning; deepening students' academic, artistic and interpretative abilities and skills; promoting culturally diverse traditions of knowledge; and creating inclusive learning environments for students and faculty members.

We recognize cultural diversity as a defining characteristic of the 21st century. The college has intensified its efforts to become a multicultural and diverse institution. Substantive experience working across cultural differences is therefore highly desirable for all positions. Committed to equal opportunity and affirmative action, TESC is working to build a diverse, broadly trained faculty. We particularly encourage applications from candidates whose race, national origin, sex, age, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, veteran status or physical disability will contribute to our diversity.

Faculty membership is unranked with salary determined on a non-competitive, open scale based on earned degrees and years of relevant experience.

Evergreen's fundamental academic commitments are summarized in the Five Foci:

  • Interdisciplinary study
  • Personal engagement in learning
  • Linking theoretical perspectives with practice
  • Collaborative/cooperative work
  • Teaching across significant differences
