Regular Faculty Position

Science Teacher Educator- 10

The Evergreen State College seeks an individual who is passionate and knowledgeable about the sciences and about teacher preparation.  We are interested in candidates who have the knowledge and skills to help pre-service teachers become excited about teaching science to their students as well as helping them understand how children and adolescents learn science. This person must also be able to integrate science concepts with issues in other content areas; prepare teacher education candidates to use assessment of students' knowledge to support effective instruction; and support candidates with master's level research projects.

The successful candidate will focus on teacher preparation in general and also specifically on preparing teacher candidates to effectively teach science in K-12 public schools to students from diverse ability, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds. The individual's primary teaching will occur in Evergreen's Master in Teaching program (MiT), with periodic rotations into the undergraduate curriculum.   The MiT program for pre-service teachers is a two-year program that awards successful candidates with a master's degree and a recommendation for certification.  It is taught collaboratively with other faculty members.

This person must have a background in science education or science teacher education, specialized knowledge and experience in one or more of the sciences and their related pedagogies(including effective use of appropriate technology); current knowledge about effective, integrated science pedagogies; experience as a K-12 science teacher; knowledge or interest in environmental education and/or sustainability; and knowledge of the impact of culture, ethnicity, and race on how learners approach, understand, and can actually have access to science content and processes.  The successful candidate will have an understanding of interdisciplinary learning as it applies specifically to a teacher preparation program and, in general, to an undergraduate liberal arts education.

Evergreen's approach to teacher education is founded on social justice and democratic principles of education.  Building on a socio-constructivist philosophy of learning, MiT candidates engage in reflective practices by closely examining K-12 student learning to inform instruction.  While the MiT program is informed by state competencies for teaching endorsements, faculty members enjoy a high degree of freedom to determine the pace, emphasis, classroom strategies and modes of assessments in the programs they teach.  Faculty candidates who have background and interests beyond teacher eudcation and have prior experience teaching with faculty from other disciplines are particularly encouraged to apply. We encourage applicants who have had experience teaching and/or working with students from underrepresented populations.

ABOUT EVERGREEN

Evergreen is a progressive public liberal arts college emphasizing integrated interdisciplinary study and collaborative team-teaching throughout the undergraduate curriculum and in three graduate programs. Teaching at Evergreen allows faculty members to exercise broad-ranging intellectual curiosity and to work collaboratively with faculty colleagues and students formulating interdisciplinary questions and inquiry.

Faculty members team-teach in full-time interdisciplinary programs. With their teaching colleagues they collaboratively design thematically centered programs that bring together multiple disciplines. Faculty teams also strive to address core academic experiences we believe should be included in all programs: teaching writing and quantitative reasoning; deepening students' academic, artistic and interpretative abilities and skills; promoting culturally diverse traditions of knowledge; and creating inclusive learning environments for students and faculty members.

We recognize cultural diversity as a defining characteristic of the 21st century. The college has intensified its efforts to become a multicultural and diverse institution. Substantive experience working across cultural differences is therefore highly desirable for all positions. Committed to equal opportunity and affirmative action, TESC is working to build a diverse, broadly trained faculty. We particularly encourage applications from candidates whose race, national origin, sex, age, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, veteran status or physical disability will contribute to our diversity.

Faculty membership is unranked with salary determined on a non-competitive, open scale based on earned degrees and years of relevant experience.

Evergreen's fundamental academic commitments are summarized in the Five Foci:

  • Interdisciplinary study
  • Personal engagement in learning
