Regular Faculty Position

Mathematics Teacher Educator - 10

Revised 9/14/09

The Evergreen State College is seeking is seeking an enthusiastic math teacher educator with the knowledge and skills to help pre- and in-service teachers understand how children and adolescents think about and develop mathematical knowledge. This person's primary teaching would occur in Evergreen's Master of Education program and in the Master in Teaching program, with periodic rotations into the undergraduate curriculum.

One strand of the M.Ed. program is designed to enhance practicing teachers' abilities to teach K-12 mathematics. The MIT program for pre-service teachers is a two-year program that awards successful candidates with a master's degree and a recommendation for certification.

We are seeking applicants with academic preparation in mathematics education and teacher education; who have experience working with in-service and pre-service teachers; and who are motivated to teach broadly. Applicants must have K-12 mathematics teaching experience and be prepared to support teachers with master's level research projects.  The successful applicant will collaborate with other faculty members in the college's M. Ed. and MIT programs, which includes team planning and teaching.

Evergreen's approach to teacher education is founded on social justice and democratic principles of education. Building on a socio-constructivist philosophy of learning, MIT and M.Ed. participants engage in reflective practice by closely examining K-12 student learning to inform instruction. MIT and M.Ed. participants will need to learn sufficient qualitative and quantitative research methods to be able to critically read original research and/or conduct Action Research.

While the M.Ed. and MIT programs are shaped by state competencies for teaching endorsements, faculty members enjoy a high degree of freedom to collaboratively determine the pace, emphasis, classroom strategies and modes of assessments in these programs.  Faculty candidates who have background and interests beyond teacher education and have prior experience teaching with faculty from other disciplines are particularly encouraged to apply. We encourage applicants who have had experience teaching and/or working with students from underrepresented populations
