Faculty Position in U.S. History

Evergreen seeks to appoint a full-time faculty member in the social or cultural history of the United States. Qualifying fields should include the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as the position requires the ability to teach major themes and events from the colonial period to the present within the broad scope of U.S. social and cultural history. Area of specialization open, but we have specific needs in women's history, gender and transgender history and the history of sexuality, labor history, and the history of race and ethnicity. Teaching history at Evergreen offers unique opportunities and challenges, as we teach primarily in theme-based, specialized seminars rather than in broad survey courses. Evergreen coordinated studies programs are inquiry-based and thematically driven, and over the course of a career the successful candidate will team-teach with colleagues from the arts, social sciences, sciences, and humanities. Given these opportunities and challenges, applicants are invited to address in their letters of application their vision of innovative approaches to teaching historical methods of research, interpretation, and writing in an interdisciplinary, collaborative, and inquiry-based classroom.

Evergreen organizes its curriculum through interdisciplinary studies (rather than through departments and courses), so the ideal candidate would show the potential for working across disciplines with faculty colleagues. In addition to teaching, faculty are expected to advise and mentor students and participate in Evergreen’s system of shared governance. Through their participation in shared governance, faculty play a significant role in most aspects of how the college is run.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in History; 
  • Areas of expertise include the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; 
  • Ability to teach major themes and events from colonial period to present within the broad scope of US social and cultural history; and 
  • College level teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in women’s history, gender and transgender history and the history of sexuality, labor history, and/or the history of race and ethnicity.

  • 1-2 page statement of your teaching philosophy and practice. Please focus specifically on your understanding and experience of interdisciplinary study and what you believe should distinguish a liberal arts education today; 
  • 1-2 page statement of your multicultural experience and/or practice
  • Examples of scholarly work (research papers or reviews); 
  • Three current letters of reference from professional colleagues (letters of reference may be submitted via regular mail or email (facultyhiring@evergreen.edu); and
  • Optional: Student evaluations and/or letters of support from current and/or former students.
