Faculty Position in Climate Justice
We seek a broadly trained, versatile faculty colleague with a background in climate policy and/or climate impacts on natural and human communities. A successful candidate would teach broadly in climate mitigation and/or adaptation, with a focus on advocacy and public education. We are especially interested in candidates with a demonstrated history of making linkages across disparate areas such as social science and ecology, science and environmental education, or sustainability and society. The successful candidate will have a working awareness of effects of climate change on communities in the US and around the globe, especially among historically marginalized populations as well as a strong understanding of the science of climate change. A working knowledge of climate and environmental policy at the local, national and global levels is critical. We encourage applications from candidates with an ability to communicate effectively with the public about technical issues through writing, public speaking, and/or community organizing.
The successful candidate will have broad knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative methodologies and/or community-based research and documentation. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research goals are compatible with helping students to link theory and practice. We seek candidates with a demonstrated passion for interdisciplinary teaching and learning. Evergreen's curricular structure facilitates project-based research as well as internships with public and private organizations, including state agencies and tribes. Candidates who will support and develop these opportunities in collaboration with the Center for Community Based Learning and Action are highly desirable.
Evergreen organizes its curriculum through interdisciplinary programs (rather than through departments and courses), so the ideal candidate will demonstrate the potential for working across disciplines with faculty colleagues. At Evergreen, faculty on teaching teams work closely with students and enjoy a high degree of freedom to determine the subject matter, pace, emphasis, classroom strategies and modes of evaluation. Qualified applicants will teach in their area of expertise, and collaborate across disciplines to connect theory with practice.
- Ph.D. (or other relevant terminal degree);
- Knowledge of climate and environmental policy at the local, national and global levels;
- Strong understanding of the science of climate change;
- Working awareness of effects of climate change on communities in the US and around the globe, especially among historically marginalized populations;
- Broad knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative methodologies, and/or community-based research and documentation; and
- Passion for and commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and learning.
- Strong interest in contributing to a curriculum that emphasizes connecting theory to practice;
- Ability to teach quantitative research methods;
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public about technical issues through writing, public speaking, and/or community organizing;
- The ability to support students’ development of writing skills, as applicable;
- Experience in working with diverse and underrepresented populations;
- Experience in pursuing innovative and engaging teaching strategies; and
- Academic background or experience working with communities confronting climate change, climate change policy, advocacy and outreach.
