Faculty Teaching Fellowship (Biochemistry/Chemistry)

This fellowship offers a unique teaching experience to support faculty at the beginning of their academic career. It is designed as a two-year, full-time visiting faculty position (2014–2016) for recent Ph.D. graduates interested in a teaching at a liberal arts college. The program is open only to candidates with one year or less of full-time teaching experience since earning the Ph.D. (teaching experience gained as a graduate student is not counted). Candidates interested in teaching chemistry/biochemistry to undergraduates within an innovative, interdisciplinary environment that promotes teaching through learning communities.

The Faculty Teaching Fellow will have a faculty mentor and teach as part of an interdisciplinary science team. The team will develop undergraduate biochemistry and general chemistry curricula (including laboratories) and teach in interdisciplinary academic programs. Candidates must be able to teach general chemistry and biochemistry at the undergraduate level and ideally be able to make connections to other lab sciences (ex. molecular biology, physics, organic chemistry, cell biology). The applicant must demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate science education. A possible teaching assignment might be:

2014-15: General Chemistry: Introduction to Natural Science

2015-16: Biochemistry: Molecule to Organism

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Chemistry or related field (earned no earlier than 2012); 
  • No more than one year of full-time teaching since earning PhD; 
  • Ability to teach general chemistry and biochemistry at the undergraduate level; and 
  • Demonstrated Interest in interdisciplinary team-teaching teaching.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • College level teaching experience (teaching experience while a graduate student acceptable); and
  • Ability to connect chemistry/biochemistry content and concepts to other lab science disciplines.
