Seminar II Building |

Description
Construction of the 159,862 square foot Seminar II Building was completed and open to students, faculty and staff, the start of Spring Quarter of 2004. The building is the college's newest building construction project from the ground up. It was built with special consideration given to the college's commitment to the environment by using building material and a design that is environmentally friendly and to accomodate the institution's expected full time student enrollment increase. The college will apply for Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification during the summer of 2004 for the complex. A design team of Evergreen administrative staff, faculty and students collaborated with Mahlum Architects of Seattle, and their sub-consultants, on the design of the building. In addition to the sustainable and environmental features, the team incorporated the academic program and administrative functional use of the building into the design. This cooperative approach to the design reflects the cross team practices that the college encourages. Seminar II is a model for sustainability and environmentally responsible building construction application and design practices. All products and materials that were used are environmentally friendly (contain the lowest volatile organic compounds available, i.e., carpeting, adhesives, solvents, etc.). The building is also wired for 21st century technology. A few of the features and materials that are used throughout the buildings are; the fly ash content of the concrete, recycled hardwood, cork floors, the natural ventilation system and radiant heating, the indirect and and natural lighting, the 'green' roofs, the natural cistern that collects water run off from the roofs, lecture halls which are designed to be more intimate than the other larger halls on campus, and landscaping that includes native plants. Polished concrete floors throughout the building reduces maintenance expenses, an minimizes pollutants from carpeting in the buildings. Feel free to peruse the halls of the building and see for yourself what 'green building' is about. For more information about this project click on the header.
