| Driftwood-Overhulse Drainage Correction |
Nearly 500 linear feet of storm drainage pipe and several catch basins have been installed parallel to the existing walkway that runs from the intersection of Driftwood Road and Overhulse Road to the recreation field. This new underground storm drain system will ensure the surface water runoff from Driftwood Road and the adjacent housing areas is properly routed into the main campus storm system. The contractor, PGH Excavating, Inc., is substantially complete. (Contact Brian Anderson for additional information: x 5422)
|
| Steam Pipe Catch Basin Drainage |
This project will allow the two steam pipe catch basins on the north side of the main recreation field to drain properly. The design is being prepared by KPFF Engineers and will be put out for bids. (Contact Brian Anderson for additional information: x 5422)

| Longhouse Renovation |
The Longhouse is back on-line and available for space scheduling.
The kitchen still remains unfinished due to vendor quality issues. We hope to resolve this soon. The installation of the floor art inside the main entry has also been delayed due to unforeseen vendor issues. We are working hard to finish these final details.

| Major Capital Projects funded for 2009-2011 Biennium |
| |
The Design of the Communications Building:
McGranahan from Tacoma was selected as the architect for the COM Building. Architect and design committee are working on programming the spaces within the building. In May of 2011 the construction documents will be due. Depending on funding, construction could begin by the summer of 2011. (Contact Hal Van Gilder for additional information x 6355) |
| |
The Design and Construction of a Sustainability Lab:
The new Sustainable Agricultural Laboratory building project is progressing. Our architect
(HKP Architects out of Mt. Vernon, WA )
is collaborating with the students in the program
Sustainable Design: A new building for the Organic Farm. The student led programming phase is producing many great ideas. The architect will take these ideas and work with sub-consultants to produce Schematic Design drawings. At the end of Winter quarter these designs will be available for the campus community to review.
(Contact David Shellman for additional information x 6556) |

The Design and Renovation of the Art Annex:
McGranahan from Tacoma was selected as the architect for the Art Annex Renovation. The architect and design committee have completed the programming phase and will begin the schematic design phase later this month. Design is scheduled to be complete by May 2010 with construction to start in the summer of 2010. Estimated construction cost is $3.7 million. Minor Works Projects planned for 2009-2011 Biennium |
| The College has received $10,490,000 for the current biennium for deferred maintenance and small capital projects. The two capital projects are the design and construction of a Sustainable Agriculture Laboratory at the Organic Farm and the small repair and improvements projects; approximately $2.1 million. The deferred maintenance work is in three categories: health, safety and code compliance; facilities preservation; and, infrastructure preservation. Some of the major work scheduled for this biennium is: a new roof for the Seminar I building; swimming/diving pool renovation; renovation of the second elevator in the C-Wing of the Library; upgrades and modernization of the College's data system; upgrade of a boiler in the Central Utility Plant; renovation of Driftwood Road from Overhulse to Lewis; and several other smaller projects in the College's facilities. The estimated cost for these projects is approximately $8.4 million. |
| |
| Small Repairs and Improvements for this biennium have been prioritized by the Space Management Committee. The construction operations unit will begin work on several of these as staff finish current projections. (Contact David Shellman for additional information x 6556) |

| BioMass Investigation |
| BioMass can be used to produce synthetic gas that can be used to renewable space heating. Facilities Services' Managers have been
working with others in the college, including the Clean Energy Committee and the Sustainability Council to determine the feasibility of using biomass researching the possibility of using BioMass to replace most natural gas usage on campus. (For more information contact Rich Davis at x6136.) |

| Resource and Conservation Management |
-
The Evergreen State College received a grant which helped us buy four solar panels. The solar photovoltaic array (PV array) is operational. The College is selling the electricity it generates back to Puget Sound Energy (PSE) at about 30 cents per kWh. The revenue generated serves as indicator of our intent to increase TESC's renewable energy production and use. The project also serves as a learning lab for the appropriate academic programs.
A photovoltaic array has also been installed to generate and provide lighting in the new bus shelter at McCann Loop.

 |
- Steam, chilled water and several important domestic cold water meters have been added throughout the Olympia campus. These meters will permit calculation of the Energy Utilization Index, the energy used per square foot per year for all major campus buildings for the first team. The recent meters report information to the Environmental Management System (EMS). Existing meters, including many of the electrical submeters owned by the college, will be updated when funding is available to automate their reporting the EMS, as well. Contact Rich Davis, College Engineer, at x6136 for more information.
|
- Mike Drennon, Mechanical Services Manager, has been steadily monitoring energy use on campus. As part of budget reductions, the College has committed itself to reducing utility costs by 10% or $285,000 (number based off of 2008-2009 utility costs). Please be conscious of our conservation goals and help us meet them.
|
- In the past year we have completed a suite of energy conservation projects which are expected to reduce our utility bill by $70,000, our carbon out put by over 500 tons, and the College will receive a rebate from PSE for about $420,000.
The college is providing PSE with performance data, a final step before the funds are released.

| |
| Electric Vehicles |
- For the past year the FAD department has leased a high speed gas/electric hybrid car for staff to take on business trips. This has increased the number of employees carpooling to meetings off campus as well as reduced mileage costs for our departments.
- Facilities Services has also bought four new electric cars for employee use on campus.

| Snyder Creek Culvert |
| The culvert improvement is complete. Wild Fish Conservancy will be monitoring the stream in the coming years to study the fish populations. They have baseline data from the last few years for comparison. The Snyder stream drainage comprises spring flows from the forest and storm flows from main campus. The storm water management improvements by virtue of the local storm water permit system may also help in the recovery of salmon and other native fish species in Snyder Creek and Snyder Cove. The culvert project will contribute to the overall health of Puget Sound in a small way, as well. (For more information contact Rich Davis at x6136.) Photo by Paul Smith |
