As a liberal arts college, Evergreen has a strong history of producing alumni with the capacity to make a difference in the world. We know many students choose to attend Evergreen because of this tradition. This year, we will launch a new opportunity for students to participate in the Evergreen Student Civic Engagement Institute (ESCEI) that will take place September 15-20, just before the start of Welcome Week and New Student Orientation.

This new Institute provides an exciting way to introduce students to the Evergreen community, including concrete experiences to foster leadership and communication skills. By participating in ESCEI, students will have the opportunity to engage in a dynamic residential learning community with peers, faculty, and community leaders throughout the Puget Sound region. The Institute will emphasize the following areas:

  • Community service with a local organization
  • Reflection on the value of community engagement;
  • Conflict resolution at the group level;
  • Collaborative problem solving;
  • Consensus building on important issues; and
  • Building community at Evergreen.

Successful completion of ESCEI, including the five-day residential program and a modest amount of continued academic work during fall quarter, will result in earning two academic credits.

Incoming Evergreen students who have previously earned less than 45 credits are encouraged to fill out this short application. Applications received by June 7, 2013 will receive priority consideration for the limited number of seats in this program.

While the full cost for the Institute is $475, we have received a generous donation from a community member that enables us to offer several full and partial scholarships. Therefore, please don’t let financial concerns deter you from applying. Participants will be selected and informed of their admission to the program by June 30.
