There is currently one 0.75 FTE (30 hours per week) classified, overtime eligible Plant Technician 3 project position available at The Evergreen State College. This project position is grant funded through November 30, 2012 with continued employment contingent on further funding. COMPENSATION
- Experience and training may be considered in salary placement.
- Salary range is $2,091.75 to $2,723.25 per month of work based on .75 FTE.

POSITION PURPOSE
Coordinate the Sustainable Prisons Project native plant restoration program in partnership with Department of Corrections (DOC), Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) and the Center for Natural Land Management including development of nursery production schedules; education and training materials for student interns as well as incarcerated individuals; draft grant/contract proposals; and other tasks supporting prairie habitat recovery.
NATURE AND SCOPE
This position reports to the Sustainable Prisons Project Manager and has the primary responsibility of coordinating with conservation organizations, agencies, Department of Corrections, and incarcerated individuals to conduct nursery, education/training, and funding activities that support South Sound prairie habitat recovery.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelors degree;
- Two years of nursery production / horticultural experience; and
- One year of experience working in a team or collaborative setting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Plan and coordinate nursery program with conservation and DOC partners including but not limited to: assisting with identification of plant production priorities; and developing a plant production schedule based on seed stratification, sowing timelines, and available resources;
- Act as liaison between prison and agencies/conservation organizations;
- Develop, coordinate, and provide training to be delivered to incarcerated nursery crew members through workshops, lectures, and other methods;
- Create initial drafts of grants and contracts for review by others to support restoration program elements such as student/staff positions, supplies, and other related expenses;
- Recruit, train, and lead the work of TESC students to assist with nursery/seed programs and related habitat recovery goals;
- Oversee quality control at nursery production sites (weekly during growing season);
- Procure and coordinate delivery of native seed and supplies for prison nursery operation as needed;
- Provide all partners with monthly program status updates via email throughout the growing season;
- Act as primary point of contact to learn of and communicate to partners issues as they arise with program components such as resources, work sites, staffing, etc.;
- Communicate with DOC project lead regarding project status, technical difficulties, and any other issues;
- Develop and deliver relevant education materials for inmates by providing books, articles, films, lectures, and/or using other appropriate tools to transfer information between inmates and the science/conservation community;
- Seasonally coordinate and lead the work of off-site crews of incarcerated individuals to accomplish restoration program tasks;
- Collect, enter, and analyze data for reports to supervisor and partners as needed;
- Write protocols as needed to be provided to program participants and shared with other interested parties;
- Write web content such as blog entries, updates on programs status, etc.;
- Write content to share with partners, publish in journals, popular media publications, etc.;
- Participate in DOC / JBLM security and safety training;
- Use project funds for purchasing supplies when appropriate.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Research, develop, and publish plant collection, propagation, and seed curation protocols;
- Assist with program-related field work;
- Work with partners to design and implement related research projects;
- Work with partners to establish horticulture-related certificate program for incarcerated individuals.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of South Sound prairie flora and propagation protocols;
- Nursery production experience;
- Ability to develop and deliver effective education and training programs;
- Proven skill and ability to coordinate and leading the work of others;
- Excellent communication, planning, and problem solving skills;
- Ability to safely work in a prison setting;
- Physical ability to move heavy containers weighing up to 50 pounds;
- Ability to create, organize, and maintain records and files;
- Experience with statistical analysis, interpretation, and scientific writing;
- Ability to compose written material such as grant proposals, protocols, etc.;
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
- Possess strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills;
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Outlook;
- Demonstrated ability to foster and maintain outstandingly good working relationships across administrative, facilities, student, and institutional sectors;
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully in a collaborative, culturally diverse work environment including the ability to work well with people of different educational, racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, gender and sexual orientation, and varying abilities and educational backgrounds;
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and effectively in a highly collaborative, non-hierarchical interdisciplinary institution, and in a hierarchical, closely regulated institution;
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends;
- Ability to travel.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work;
- Must submit to a background check;
- This position is assigned to part of the institution that is covered by a union shop provision of the Department of Personnel/Higher Education Division. Therefore, new employees are required to pay dues to the Federation of State Employees within thirty days of their hiring date;
- May require occasional evening and weekend work;
- May require travel.
