General Policies of the Academic Computer Center

Access:

All students, faculty, and staff at The Evergreen State College are provided with free or low cost access to the academic computing resources with academic usage limited by available resources. Access to and usage of computing facilities will be subject to The Evergreen State College (TESC) and the division of Computing and Communication policies, and local, state, and federal laws.

Alumni:

Alumni have access to the resources in the Computer Center in perpetuity. This means being able to use any computer that is not being used by a current student and any of the peripherals connected to equipment in the center. To do this please check in at the front desk of the computer center where a consultant will be happy to provide you with the Alumni login and password so you can get connected.

Rights of the College:

To maintain the function and operation of computing facilities and to protect them against unauthorized use, The Evergreen State College reserves the right, without notice, to limit or restrict individual use and hours of operation; to inspect, copy, or remove data, file, or system resources; and to log and audit activities on computing systems.

Computer Center Disclaimer:

TESC disclaims responsibility for loss of data, individual account data contents, and unauthorized activities.

Special Rules for Special Resources

Some computers have resources not available on other systems. Examples are the Macs connected to the scanner, the Mac connected to the synthesizer, and the systems in the ACC, which have software that's different from the software in the GCC.

"Bumping" may only take place if there is a system available for the current user to continue her/his work.

For Example...

You wish to use a scanner. Someone is using Excel on one of those systems with a scanner attached. Two Macs are available elsewhere in the Mac Classroom. These also have Excel. You may ask the user to move.

What about the same situation, except that there are no Macs available except the ones at Post 1, which do not have Excel? In this case, you cannot bump the other user. Put your name on the waiting list. When an Excel-equipped Mac becomes available, you can bump the Excel user to that Mac while you take the Mac attached to a scanner.

Consultants are available to facilitate this process, although Academic Computing encourages users to handle this themselves.

Games

Games always take the back seat to academic use. Always. You may ask anyone playing games to vacate a computer. Ask a consultant to facilitate this, if you wish. (Remember: games are never permitted in the ACC. Game playing is prohibited between 8 A.M. and 10 P.M. elsewhere)

Changes:

Changes to policies or procedures will be posted in the Computer Center and announced via notices. Users are responsible for checking policies and procedures whenever changes are announced or they return from an extended leave.

No Commercial or Campaign Work:

No commercial or campaign work of any kind will be accepted. It is contrary to the intent of this policy and to state law for college computing resources to be used for the direct personal financial gain (real or intended) of any individual.

Flexibility:

The Evergreen State College computer services recognizes that The Evergreen State College modes of study are in many ways unique. Consequently, computer services is committed to a policy of flexibility in meeting the needs of The Evergreen State College students, faculty, and staff.

Priorities:

Academic computing resources are provided to currently enrolled students to facilitate program research and project completion. Computer-oriented credit generating programs, when computer resources are limited, have priority access to computing resources. Otherwise, an open access policy prevails circumscribed by necessary class/lab and exercise practice reserve times.

Privacy:

A student's data, existing in an academic computer account, will be released to a third party only when required by law rather than not being released only when prohibited by law. Student accounts on academic computing systems will be administered and reviewed by academic computing staff as required for system management and administration.

Abuse of college computing resources:

Users of computer services are expected to use its resources in a responsible manner and with regard for other user rights. Users are responsible for their own actions, account holdings, and account usage. Computer services relies on peer pressure, individual responsibility, Evergreen rules and policies, acceptable use policies of the Washington State K-20 Network, and the general body of law (local, state, and federal) to prevent abuse of the college's computing resources.

Disciplinary Action:

Disciplinary action against an individual shall abide by college grievance and disciplinary procedures and policies. An attempt will be made to resolve differences at the lowest departmental or divisional level.

Copying of software:

No duplication of copyrighted material is permissible. (Under guidelines of title 17 of the U.S. code.) Violators may lose computing access privileges and be subject to further discipline. No copyrighted software may be placed on any hard disk system without written authorization from the copyright owner and the manager of academic computing.

Account usage and lifetimes:

User accounts, for storing user data files, on Academic Computing designated computer systems may be requested from the Manager of Academic Computing. As a user of academic computing resources and a participatory member of the user community, the resource user or account holder agrees to abide by current rules and procedures for utilization of computing resources available through academic computing; the resource user or account holder agrees to abide by all of the rules and policies established by The Evergreen State College and Computing & Communications.

Who May Use an Account:

Further, the user or account holder will hold account or resource access and usage to himself or herself and not loan or authorize any other person usage of the resource or account through any means. Failure to comply will result in immediate termination of the account and contents and loss of computing access privileges. The college may also require reimbursement of costs which, if not paid, may necessitate further disciplinary action, as provided for by college rules including, but not limited to, withholding transcripts, registration denial, suspension, or expulsion.

Lifetimes of Accounts:

Student accounts or authorized user files will exist on an academic system as long as a student is currently enrolled in the particular program or course. Accounts for students dis-enrolled or on leave will be automatically disabled and deleted. Students are responsible for backing up their account or resource files/data onto their own floppy diskettes. System changes and updates may prevent data on academic servers from being reloadable.
