Computer Center Help (E-Z)Every student at Evergreen has an email account. If you do not know about your account (what your alias is...) or are hearing about it for the first time, jump to the accounts section. You can access your Evergreen email by going to www.evergreen.edu/webmail and login. << BACK There are a limited supply of ethernet cables available for checkout (must have picture ID) at the Consultant Desk. Plugging in via an ethernet cable with your laptop is possible in the Computer Center. [See below picture for computer plug-in illustration.] There are ethernet jacks allowing you to access the Internet and Evergreen's network all over SEM II and other buildings on-campus. Wireless is also available.
<< BACK Excel is available on all the computers in the Center (Office 2003 for PC & Office 2004 for Mac). Excel is Microsoft's spreadsheet application capable of analyzing data and producing charts. The Computer Center holds a series of Excel workshops every quarter (except Summer). Other Helpful Links: << BACK Both Mac and PC utilize a organizational structure consisting of files and folders on their hard drive. Keeping track of where you are in the folder structure is a large part of understanding how computers work. Managing where your files live also cuts down on loss of data and any other mishaps. The Computer Center has set up specific folders (called Documents) for you on the desktop to store your files on both PCs and Macs. This allows for easy access and help the management process. (See Saving and Storage Options.) File Extensions: Each file has a signifying three digit extension, e.g. contract.doc is a Word document/file with a ".doc" extension. These extensions help determine what application the file was produced and can be viewed. Other Helpful Links << BACK Final Cut Pro HD is available on all Macs in the Center (except the Audio Midi Station and older G4s). Final Cut Pro is Apple's professional digital video editing application. Other Helpful Links: << BACK The Computer Center cannot help you with any personal computer hardware problems in general. << BACK InDesign CS2 is available on all Macs in the Center (except the DV and Audio Midi Station). InDesign is Adobe's professional print publishing and layout design application. The Computer Center holds a series of InDesign workshops every quarter (except Summer). Other Helpful Links: << BACK iMovie 6/HD is available on all Macs in the Center. iMovie is Apple's consumer-grade digital video editing application. The Computer Center holds an iMovie workshop every quarter (except Summer). Other Helpful Links: << BACK Evergreen has access to the Internet via a T1 line through Washington State. Any Internet connection has its moments of slow lag time throughout the day. Although it's difficult at times to predict an outage, we will do our best to inform you ahead of time if there are any known down time. Other Helpful Links: << BACK For Mac: On the Finder toolbar, click the Language Option drop-down menu (the center icon in image below - may be a US flag) to change to another language. The default is US English.
For PC: From the Start Menu, select Settings > Control Panel > Regional Settings. Check the language you would like to read under the Language Settings. << BACK There is a "laptop station" located in the Computer Center where you can sit and work. We have ethernet and wireless available. There are laptops available for checkout in Media Loan. If you bring a laptop into the Computer Center to access our network, please see the Virus Software section. << BACK Linux is a Unix-based operating system. The ACC has a Linux Operating System available. The email kiosks at the front of the Center are also running Linux. For more information about obtaining a Linux account to use in the ACC see our ACC Access Policy and the Grace site. << BACK There are a myriad of email lists (listservs) Evergreen utilizes. There are community lists and program lists. Program lists are required for students enrolled in a program where the faculty chooses to use a list. Faculty and staff can request the creation of a new list, otherwise please contact a Computer Center Staff for more information. Evergreen's list server software is called Lyris. You can unsubscribe to lists in your my.evergreen.edu account. << BACK Local: the computer you are working on. Network: any Evergreen server. There is a great difference between working on your files "locally" and working on your files on the "network." It is recommended that you copy any network files onto the local computer where you are and work "locally." Not only, will you maintain a backup of your file, but you will work much quicker. When done working "locally," simply copy your file back. The main servers on the Evergreen Network where students work are Calawah and Coyote. Access to Coyote. << BACK Logging into Computer Center Computers Macs -- all the Macs in the Computer Center do not require that you log on. If you do come across a login window, login as "guest" with no password and click OK. PCs -- you may either log into any PC in the Computer Center with your Evergreen acount (to access Network shares) or there is specific computer login information at the top of every monitor. Follow the instructions, enter the login sequence and no password, click OK. << BACK There is a lost and found box at the Consultant Desk in the Computer Center. Any valuable items may be taken to Police Services, ask them to look in the cabinet. << BACK Maple is now the Evergreen Student Email server. For Mac: Click on the Monitor icon (the left one on the image below) on the top Finder toolbar. You can also select System Preferences on the Dock for more options. The larger the resolution size the smaller items on the screen will appear giving you more room to work.

room to work. Moodle is one of the courseware web applications in use for Evergreen programs. Access: www2.evergreen.edu/moodle If your course/program uses Moodle, please contact Beth Stinson (stieli@evergreen.edu) for assistance. You can also go to the above link and obtain help or download the student manual (PDF). << BACK There is one devoted computer in the Computer Center that has OCR software and scanner. OCR (Optical Character Recognition) allows you to take an original hardcopy text document and turn it into an electronic, editable document. To start, select OmniPage Pro 10 from the Apple menu. Place first page face down on scanner and choose Process > Scan Image. Click the Preview button, select text area and click Scan. You can also scan in the GCC and MCC into Acrobat as a PDF and capture the text in Adobe's Acrobat Professional by selecting Document > Recognize Text Using OCR . << BACK OS X is an Apple Macintosh operating system. All Macs in the Computer Center are running OS 10.4. The Computer Center holds an introduction to OS X workshop in the Fall quarter. Other Helpful Links: << BACK Outlook is the main email client available (PCs only) at Evergreen. Simply log in with your Evergreen account on any PC in the Computer Center. Entourage may be accessible for Macs. Other Helpful Links: << BACK Photoshop CS2 is available on all the computers in the Center. Photoshop is Adobe's professional digital imaging and editing application. The Computer Center holds a series of Photoshop workshops every quarter (except Summer). Other Helpful Links: << BACK PowerPoint is available on all the computers in the Center (Office 2003 for PC & Office 2004 for Mac). PowerPoint is Microsoft's presentation slideware graphics application. The Computer Center holds a series of PowerPoint workshops every quarter (except Summer). Other Helpful Links: << BACK There are usually three working laser printers in the Computer Center. The main ones are called "AC Laser" in the print dialog box by default. Printing is free to Evergreen students, however, we ask that you try not to waste paper and consolidate small bits of information into one Word document if possible. In most cases, free printing is a luxury we'd like to keep. In order to conserve paper, by default, multiple pages print on both sides (duplex). If you need to print with special paper or on a paper size different than 8.5 x 11, please ask a consultant for assistance. Duplex Printing (how to turn it off) Printing in Color Printing in Photoshop Printing in InDesign Maple is now the Evergreen Student Email server. << BACK The best place to save your files when working in the Computer Center is in the specified "Documents" folder (NOT "My Documents" on PCs). There is a shortcut to the "Documents" folder on the Desktop on both PCs* and Macs. You can create your own folder in there. This is a temporary storage option. Other options include:
* The specific path for the "Documents" folder on PCs is C:\User\Documents. << BACK Here are step-by-step instructions for both
a PC and a Mac: If you need a slide or film holder, ask for it at the Consultant Desk. << BACK Scratch is a temporary file storage space on the Evergreen network, specifically, the Calawah server. Scratch is community-managed and items saved there can be deleted at any time. The average saving span is two weeks. Calawah is accessible on both the PCs (Desktop) and Macs (Dock) in the Center. << BACK If you are bringing in a laptop to use at the Computer Center for the first time, please make sure to pick up a Virus Software CD at the Consultant's Desk. A consultant will be glad to help install the software so that you may keep viruses off your computer and our network. and seminar conferencing software. See the latest news in the link below. Other Helpful Links: << BACK Any student at Evergreen can obtain their own web space. Evergreen's Academic Web site http://academic.evergreen.edu (on Coyote) provides a place for students faculty and staff to experiment with web publishing. If you've got an @evergreen.edu account, and you'd like to request a web page, you can publish your own web pages. Simply log into my.evergreen.edu and request web space.
