Ideas continuing forward
as of February 11, 2003

First - we'd like to express our thanks to the campus community for your active participation in developing a list of ideas for reducing existing costs and/or raising additional revenues. Your candor, creativity, and thoughtfulness have been extremely helpful in this process.

We've now studied all the feedback given to us in the public forum on January 27th, through the web site at http://www.evergreen.edu/committee/revenue/, and from emails received by the Financial Futures Group. We've grouped like-ideas together; we've fine-tuned our thinking about the best way to proceed on each idea. We're looking at ways of getting more student input. We've tried to be realistic about what can be achieved in the near-term.

At this time, we've decided to focus on 19 ideas, falling into three categories (see attached spreadsheet):

(A) Ideas which will receive a thorough 'business analysis' over the next month -- we'd like to know more about the resources required (human, financial, facilities) in order to yield a financial benefit from the ideas, and also gain a better understanding of exactly how much financial benefit is really possible. This analysis is due back to the Financial Futures group by the first week of March.

  • the 'business analysis' for each idea will be posted/distributed in early March
  • feedback (via another public forum, plus the web page) will be sought in mid-March
  • the Financial Futures group will make its final recommendation about these ideas to the CBC in late March.

(B) Ideas which will receive their thorough analysis by a subcommittee of the College Budget Counsel -- just two ideas fit into this category, both related to student fees. This work will flow directly to the CBC.

(C) Ideas which are being forwarded directly to specific Vice Presidents for action within their division. Vice Presidents will report back to the Financial Futures group about progress on these ideas by the first week of May 2003.

**If you have expertise to lend to the analysis/development of these ideas, please feel free to contact the person listed in the "Lead Person for Analysis/Plan" column in the spreadsheet.**

And what about the other 90+ ideas submitted? What will happen to them? There are many excellent ideas remaining on the list ... but we fear we've taken on as much work as we can possibly accomplish right now. It's our intention to come back to these ideas this summer and take a more thorough look at how to move forward on them.

Meanwhile -- please continue to submit your ideas at the web site. And please be patient with us! We'll probably have to wait until summer to consider your good idea, but we're still interested in hearing from you. ;-)

And thanks again for all your help.
