The Clean Energy Committee strives to promote clean energy technology by providing financial support for clean energy projects that benefit the college, the local community and the global environment. Our job is to represent the students’ voice for the advancement of renewable energy on campus. Every student pays $1 per credit towards the Clean Energy Fund to purchase green energy and sustain on-campus clean energy projects. The original Clean Energy initiative (passed by 91% of Evergreen students) was radical, not only making Evergreen one of the first Colleges to offset 100% of its electrical usage but doing so through an entirely student driven process. We propose four initiatives which would make 2010 another landmark year for clean energy on campus.
1. A new student position to the CEC: APPROVED
This member will work on the campus Climate Action Plan (CAP) projects. The CAP is a list of strategies for Evergreen to achieve its commitment of carbon neutral by 2020. This new position will allow direct student involvement with campus-wide clean energy projects. 2. Expanding the clean energy purchase area: NOT APPROVED
The current initiative restricts the purchase of green power to the Pacific Northwest. While this allows for the development of renewable energy our region, Puget Sound Energy was recently sold to foreign investors, sending some of our money overseas. By amending the initiative to include all of the United States we could better support the national economy and reduce the global carbon footprint by supporting clean energy in more coal intensive regions of the country.
3. Clean energy fee restructure: APPROVED
The Initiative guarantees that 10% of the Clean Energy Fund is accessible by students for on-campus clean energy conservation, demonstration, or education projects. The reduced cost of green power and greater on campus energy efficiency has reduced the amount of Clean Energy Funds needed to purchase green power. In order to ensure that students have a voice in how their fees are spent, we propose that all remaining funds after the purchase of green power be allocated to the CEC for on-campus clean energy projects.
4. Expanding the role of the CEC: APPROVED
To broaden our scope of eligible projects, we want to support resource conservation, a clean energy graduate fellowship, a community event (the Clean Energy Fair), and other large-scale campus projects.
