The Evergreen State College is excited to collaborate with Dr. John Navazio from the Organic Seed Alliance (formerly Abundant Life Seed Foundation of Port Angeles, WA). Evergreen Ecological Agriculture faculty, Martha Rosemeyer, is assiting John in the OSA's ongoing research Public Breeding for Organic Agriculture: Horizontal Resistance to Late Blight in Tomatoes. This research was funded by a generous grant from the Organic Farming Research Foundation. In the Maritime Northwest, tomato plants regularly suffer from Late Blight - a devestating disease caused by the fungus Phytophthora infestans. Evergreen facutly and students are busy with this research designed to develop new varieties of organic tomato with resitance to Late Blight. This research involves breeding tomatoes organically, and is not genetic modification. This research plot is also being replicated at Old Tarboo Farm in Quicene, WA. In May, 680 tomato starts were planted in research plots consisting of 12 blocks with three replications at the Evergreen Organic Farm. Parameters to be quantified are:
