Printmaking: Mokuhanga Japanese Technique

Art and nature come together in this hands-on exploration of Japanese woodblock printing, called Mokuhanga.

Through an investigation of printing techniques dating back to the Edo period (1603-1868) for the style known as Ukiyo-e, this class will explore and demonstrate a close appreciation of nature in art making. The subject matter of the art will be up to the student's discretion. Technical application of printing traditional Japanese methods will define the visual aesthetic of the work.

Assignments are supportive of beginner to advanced students. Students will work in a collaborative learning environment for this in-person class on Evergreen's Olympia campus. Through step-by-step demonstrations, lectures, and video tutorials, in-class sessions, and independent access to the studio for work completion.
